BRIEF REPORT
The Devil is in the Detail by Trevor Dutton
The latest regarding the Adam Oval upgrade, besides the restrictions placed on the Club regarding parking around the track during the earth works stage and the problems with dust etc. which is a fair call and everybody should understand including the local residents. ( short term pain for long term gain )
The Council rang Rob Hurley at very very short notice this last week wanting a site meeting to discuss the plans around the track area under the trees etc. This meeting had to be put off due to work commitments by Rob ( and I also was not available ) it is set down for early next week but via phone the plan had 20mm aggregate instead of grass ( lawn ) under the trees around the track was conveyed. This was blamed on the landscaping people, the Project Manager was told that this was not acceptable to the club and the their reasoning was flawed as 20mm aggregate will compact the same as lawn, cut into the exposed tree roots etc. it will also be difficult to walk on and stones may end up on the track etc. So hopefully these concerns will be taken back and other ideas will be submitted to us next week, considering we have been waiting for these plans for around a month or more, we are not looking at being pushed into an incorrect hasty decision.
It was also agreed in principle that their will be money available to join the new Clubroom to the old Soccer clubrooms and plans are being drawn up ( still waiting to see the plans ) and the Council's Financial department has agreed on an affordable lease arrangement for the soccer clubroom ( a lot less than first proposed ) But again the Club will only commit to all this once the final plans are agreed upon, the Devil is in the detail.
City of Salisbury Medal Winner Closed Championship by Trevor Dutton
TATTOO THIS new sponsor this year to the Club has really got behind the Club supporting various events through out the year. Donald's support of his children and their Club has been outstanding, with Tattoo this sponsoring the Girls Division, today's Closed Championship and assisting Santa behind the scenes. The Club truly thanks Donald and his team at Tattoo This for their support and wish them all a Happy Christmas and Safe New Year.
Forty Five riders turned out for the final race meeting of the season, the City of Salisbury Medal Winner Closed Championship who was Josh Debattista in 2009.A Closed Championship is ran the same as a normal race meeting that is three handicap and two gate start races, this is designed hopefully give a more even chance for some riders to win a trophy or medallion on the day, where all open championships are gate starts.
Six Tiny Tots showed their skills on the track with all getting maximum points in this noncompetitive division, with Tyson Osborne, Kailem Parifilo, Bree James . Aiden Ratcliff, Corey Munn and Blade Hudson taking medallions on the day.
Jayden Zaltron on sixteen points took first place from Thomas Jansen, Cody James , Aiden Weinert and Emily Carden in Division Seven in some good racing on the day.
Division Six saw some tight racing with a run off between Michael Ratcliff and Kyle Osborne for third place, the final placing first Jake Kerley, from Matthew Snowden, Kyle , Michael and Danielle Zatron. ( note all runn offs in closed Championship are ran on handicaps )
Sixteen points hard fought by Jamie-Lee Clee-Collins had him take out Division Five from Jake Mathews, with Jesse Smith winning the run off for third from Joshua Carden and Matthew Hurley not far behind on 6 points. Joshua took out one of the two encouragement awards on the Day.
Division Four had some very good battles on the track, but Robbie Vella won the day on fifteen points from Braden Makepeace, Marc Mastrodomenico, Connor Whelan and Angus Elloitt. Angus took out the other encouragement award .
In the Girls Division Jessica Snowden on seventeen points took first place from Lindsay Jolly with another run off for third between Annabel Blaker and Sarah-Jayne Clee-Collins . Annabel won the battle from Sarah-Jayne taking third with Tiana Debattista and Monique Mathews making up the competitive girls division.
A two horse race in the Over Thirties saw Rick Jolly win the day from Darren Mathews, although these two mixed it with Division two in the handicaps they retained points for their division.
A clean sweep by Josh Debattista from Jay Walters, Michael Bouhalus, Tyrone Walters , Ben Blaker and Ben Graetz in Division Two showed why he will be one to watch next year but don't discount Jay because when he puts his mind to it he can mix it with the best.
Division One had five riders who were out to race and enjoy themselves from all gate starts which is how they had raced all year. Cody Chadwick on nineteen points lead the way from Lee Collins, Ryan Edson, Jarrod Weinert and Shane Weinert with some tight tactical racing all day.
The day finished with Santa arriving giving a out stockings and ice blocks but more importantly his time in this his busies time of the year, listening to the kids and giving them the joy of his company. Thank you Santa . Then the end of year BBQ and fight water saw Robert Hurley getting wetter than the kids and enjoying it just as much.
Salisbury Jets AGM by Trevor Dutton
At the Club's AGM today 5/12/09 it was noted by President Robert Hurley that the club had a very good year in growth and held a successful World International with only the bad aspect being the dealings with the Salisbury Council regarding the Adams Oval up grade or lack of communication more to the point or even the miscommunication from the Council.
First we were told parking around the track was not a problem Second then we were told we couldn't park around the Track Third it was passed at Council meeting that we can have a sealed parking area around the track Fourth we were told that the parking area wouldn't be sealed Fifth we were told it will be sealed with recycled rubber compound, we wait and see what the final outcome will be.
There are too many unanswered questions regarding the Adams Oval upgrade around our track that leaves us wondering if their is a plan at all or if their is money left after new clubrooms and extensions to the two Soccer Clubs. We are gathering forces with Members of Parliament, Councilors and soon local residents because we are not convinced that the park's dust problem will be fixed as part of the upgrade and this was the first major concern and commitment from the Stake holders and Council at the first meeting many years ago.
Drainage is another concern and we are not convinced the Council have it right regarding run off from the outer of the track, seating and shade at the western end is in the costing stage and we will be proactive with this as well as other areas mentioned above. Hopefully we will get straight answers from the Project Manager, Engineer or their bosses who we have also been in contact with.
The disappointment with Building wish list,The Club was asked for a wish list regarding building upgrade / utilization was requested from Council and submitted by the Club along with other items which was also encouraged by the Council. This included removing the joining wall between the Junior Soccer Club and our Clubrooms, among other options, we were verbally told that utilizing the Junior Soccer Clubrooms was the best option and achievable by the Council Engineer, even to the point of explaining how this could be achieved.. Then at a recent meeting to be told that no money has been allocated to the Salisbury Cycle Speedway Club for building upgrades, begs the question why was the club told to submit plans etc to the Council in the first place. The two Soccer Clubs are getting building upgrades including a new Clubrooms canteen and toilet facilities and the Salisbury Cycle Speedway cannot even receive part of the Federal funding to bring their toilets up the 2009 standards or building upgrades.
This issue of building funding money for Salisbury Cycle Speedway is being perused by Councilors and we will endeavour the find answers, there is a problem with amount of rent the Council wants for the old Junior Soccer Clubrooms but even this maybe able to be negotiated however leasing that building without upgrade EG: removing the joining wall would be pointless but again this doesn't explain where the building funding money for Salisbury Cycle Speedway went or was it their in the first place another good question.
In the twenty plus years I have dealt with the Salisbury Council on behalf of the Club this is the most unprofessional, add hock and disrespectful performance I have ever seen. This has been relayed to the Members of Parliament, Councilors, Project Manager and Nichola Kapitza the Manager of Culture, Recreation & Youth for the City of Salisbury. ( I got that off my chest so back to the AGM)
The New Committee was elected unopposed in a very quiet AGM with the out going President Rob Hurley thanking all committee members , volunteers and Club members for their fantastic efforts in the World Internationals and their tireless efforts through out the year, a big thank you to the new sponsors who came on board year and finally his disappoint with the dealing with Salisbury Council regarding the Adams Oval upgrade as explained above.

CHADWICK BOYS PLAY THE NUMBERS GAME by Trevor Dutton
For the Chinese it's the Year of the Ox , for the Salisbury Club it is the Year of the
Chadwicks, in the beginning of the
year Cody Chadwick came second in the Senior World Individual Championship to become the World number two in Cycle speedway and Joel Chadwick came fourth in the Junior World Individual
Championship in a run off with his brother Cody.
In the recent Australian Individual Championship held at Murray Bridge Joel took out the Australia Open Title against the World Senior number one and two riders in Daniel Pudney and his brother Cody, to become the youngest Australia Number one rider in Cycle Speedway history. These two brother have been racing since the age of four and have won many Divisional Titles and Club awards and are set to set the Cycle Speedway world on its' head if they get the chance to complete in Edenton, North Carolina in 2011
The Trevor Dutton 20" Invitational by Trevor Dutton
At the 2009 Trevor Dutton Invitational held at Salisbury today (24/10/09), the first heat on paper looked like it would set the scene for some exciting racing and it didn't disappoint. The draw of Shane Bentley and Robbie Vella two of the stronger and faster riders on 20" bikes in the first heat along with the two much improved speedsters Braden Makepeace and Braden Clarke would have more to my liking for the 20th race of the meet. Because these four were the ones to beat but in saying that riders of the calibre of Damain Crawfiord, Lindsay Jolly, Angus Elliot , Nicole Kinross, Trent Forrester and young Todd Clarke would be in the mix for an upset.
The inside gate for Shane Bentley on Robbie Vella, let Shane lead from start to finish in the first heat and he never
looked back from there taking the 2009 20" Invitational without dropping a poi
nt. Robbie needed a couple of starts
to settle into the groove dropping another against Nicole Kinross in his second race. Braden Makepeace only dropped points in that first heat and picked up firsts in his other four races showing some brilliant tactical
racing well done mate.
What more could you want a run off for second and third after some good quality racing, well I would have like a draw in the run off both boys deserved the second place but at this level it's about competition.Braden Clarke another who only dropped points in that fatefull first race draw, he showed why he was picked and was unlucky to miss out on a trophy.
Riders who impress, there are many riders who this year have impress not only myself but others in the sport and those riders showed why their names keep being mentioned around the clubs. Lindsay Jolly again shows that desire to to do her best at every oppurtunity and meet any challenge put in front of her has not disminished. Nicole Kinross started well with two wins and a third but her last two races let her down otherwise she would have been in the placegetters. Trent Forrester and Angus Elliot showed why they were picked and improve with each outing, along with Todd Clarke who performed outstandingly for his age in this competition. Jack Norman is another youngster who will benefit from his ride in the Invitational along with Jessica Snowden who was first reserve and came into the formula at number eleven, when Shiranta Aston didn't show, Jess earnt a second place in her first race and a fall in her third didn't help but she did not disgrace herself. All the riders performed well and will improve with time and more experience on the track and racing against different riders hones the skills`required because Daniel Pudney and Cody Chadwick didn't become World number one and two respectively without hard work and dedication.

The Brian Herd 26" Invitational by Trevor Dutton
After the 20" Invitational was won the big boys came out to play, with three riders missing both reserves and one
extra was needed so reserves Jarrod Weinert and Tyrone Walters slotted in with Michael Bouhalis filling extra vacancy. The draw was mixed early with only Ross Priest , Matt Mathews and Cameron C
risp in the second race of the meet.A relevant easy first up for Daniel Bax who
lead all the waywith Daniel Thompson trying to stay with . The second had a battle with Matt, Ross, Cameron and Josh Debattista with Matt pressured all the way surviving a move on the last corner to take
the win.The third race saw Paul White show the younger rider in Bobby McMillan that he hasn't lost it,well not in his first race of the day anyway, Mark Sheldon shows Lee Collins that you need to pedal to
the line taking third place. The fourth had a restart with Tony Bax changing his bike, but that did not alter his desire to come and race with Tony leading from start to finsh from Shane Weinert, Jarrod Weinert and Jay Walters.
After all the riders had two races each there was only three points between eight riders ( half the field ) and two points between the top six riders, it was set for the next round. Daniel, Ross, Josh and Paul scored full points with some top exciting racing now there was two points separating the top four riders with two round the go and a few riders falling or slidding out anything could happen. Daniel Bax ,Josh, Ross and Paul took four points into race 13, we now have only two point separating the top four riders, race 14 saw Camero Crisp leading Daniel Bax until he slips giving Daniel another four points so he goes into the last race favourite on 16 points. Going into the last races there are four riders who are capable of winning the Invitational and another 12 ready to set up their plans, Cameron takes out race 17 and finishes on 15 points, only one bad race up setting his chances. Race 18 was the race that could seal the title with Daniel Bax on 16 points and Ross on 14 points, the race went at a fast pace but Daniel took the points giving him a well earned Title win. With Ross Preist on 18 points the interest turned to second and third and race 20 with Matt on 14 points and Daniel Tompson on 13 and we weren't disappointed Matt took the points to secure a runn off against Ross. The run off saw Ross take the win and second place on the day , I think Matt was spent from race 20 but let's take nothing away from Ross who race well all day
Riders who impress, all riders impress on the day few gave up,all tried their best Daniel Thompson was happy with his fourth place the best he has done in an Invitational. shane weinert scored 8 out of 10 for his fall and roll in race 18 , finishing with three second plaes . Jarrod Weinert would have been happy with his win over Lee Collins in race 19 and I think he will not let Lee forget it (lol), Bobby McMillan had a race day he would rather forget, Tony Bax raced better than the 11 points on the score sheet starting with a win in his first race and a did not finish in the his second race but that's Cycle Speedway. All the riders raced well and thank you to all the riders for putting on a display of Cycle Speedway and to the Salisbury club for holding a great day' racing.

Early Start by Trevor Dutton
A very overcast and humid day awaited the 38 Salisbury riders who turned up to a12 O'clock start due the Club the 20" and 26 " Invitational later in the day. It was going to be a 24 degree spring day but it turned out a muggy day for racing but that did not deter our die hard riders. As usual the race day started off with the parade with the usual inspections and announcements thanking St Johns and birthday notices Dorrie Westover and Mandy Blaker on the 19th of October and Robert Dutton on the 26th , Happy Brithday to all. Friday night racing for the next two weeks at Salisbury the first due to the Aussie Titles at Murray Bridge and the other due to the League Finals
The Tiny Tots only saw two riders in Tyson Osborne and Bree James b
ut their first race had all the drama of a state Final, with riders bikes tangling and riders falling in the first half lap. In the
restart they tangled again in the first corner but were allowed to race on, whoever said this division is non competitive didn't tell the riders - Both winners.
A tight bunch of riders in Division Seven saw Chloe Smith, Trent Hardy ( F), Emily Carden, Aiden Weinert, Cody James, Thomas Jansen and Jayden
Zaltron race it out with Chloe taking the honours from Tho
mas , Aiden and Cody .
Two heats needed in gate starts for Division Six had some good racing between Kaeden Langham, Holly Greenhalgh, Matty Snowden, Kyle Osbourne, Jayden Hardy, Jake Kerley and Danielle Zaltron with close even racing but Matty just finishing in front of Kyle from Jake and Kaeden.
Six on the grid for Division Five with only three races on the day ( due to the Invitationals ) it was a battle with Jake Mathews , Matthew Hurley, Jesse Smith, Joshua Carden, Jamie-Lee Clee-Collins and Dylan Collins. A tie was the result with Jesse and Dylan finished on the same points from Jake and Jamie-Lee.
Ryan Greenhalgh, Connor Whelan, Braden Makepeace, Angus Elloit and Marc Mastrodomenico make up Division
Four on the day with Ryan winning the first but then the score sheet mixes it up with handicap racing and Braden taking it easy for the Invitational saw Connor take the points from Marc, A
ngus, with Braden and ryan finishing on the same points.
The Girls Division was next, the riders were presented with special racing tops before racinf started and these girls looked good in the pink and black tops with their team names on them. Jessica Snowden, Monique Mathews, Annabel Blaker and Lindsay Jolly race as good as they looked in the new tops with only three points between the all four riders, with Lindsay finishing from Jessica, Monique and Annbel
Over Thirties riders Darren Mathews and John Hill mixxed in with the Division Two riders of Ben Blaker, Sarah-Jayne Clee-Collins, Michael
Bouhalis and new rider Ben Graetz. with Josh Debattista, Jay Walters and Tyrone Walters racing with the Division One. The first race saw Darren make a very nice inside move on Michael who was running
second to John Hill who lead all the way. With riders gaining points for their division sa
w Sarah-Jayne from Michael ,
Ben Blaker , Ben Graetz, Josh, Tyrone and Jay. For the Over Thirties John took the honours from Darreb who didn't finish the last race.
Throwing in Josh, Tyrone and Jay with the Division One riders of Matt Mathews, Nigel Greenhalgh, Jarrod Weinert, Daniel Bax, Tony Bax, Shane Weinert and Lee Collins saw some very interesting racing especially in the handicap races, most were turning their legs over for the Invitational but with three races Jarrod finished ahead of Matt and Nigel both on equal points then came Shane and Lee again on the same points followed by Tony Bax and Daniel Bax.
Jeffries' City of Salisbury by Trevor Dutton
Jeffries Garden Products came to the party in sponsoring the City of Salisbury along with Tattoo This sponsoring the Inaugural Girls Division. Yes the Club added two girls division into this Championship one under 13 (20 inch ) and over 13 (26 inch ) Girl Divisions. ( sorry young ladies ) which had some very close racing on the day. The Club would like to thank Jeffries and Tattoo This, for their support and also all the volunteers who help put on the Championship.
Eighty three riders showed up to race with ninety one nominated the eight missing missed out on some top racing and a prelude to the Australian Titles in November.Seven Tiny Tots battled it out in this non competitive grade with all of them starring but Aidan Ratcliff shone on the day this two & a half year old on his second race meeting just wanted to race and was always ready and never gave up. ( He'll sleep tonight )
Twelve riders in Division Seven saw this the largest field on the day fight all day with points ( the lead ) moving around the riders. Jayden Zaltron started well with two wins but had a fall in the third heat which set the scene for his next race but still finishing on a credible nine points after a fall. The final had Cooper Osborne (16),Karah Schultz Robert Corsaro (14) and Aiden Weinert (12) and has with sudden finals anything can happen Cooper lead well but Karah made an inside pass, Aiden got a good gate and Robert struggled. ( only in this race ) with the Final places Karah Schultz, Cooper Osborn, Aiden Weinert and Robert Corsaro.
Two heats of four saw eight rider compete in Division Six, again tight close racing maybe not always on the track but on the score sheet. Three riders on eleven points after four races saw Michael Ratcliff, Jayden Hardy and Angel Carsaro in a run off with only two riders going into the sudden death final. Leaving Mathew Snowden(16), Jake Kerley(13), Jayden Hardy and Michael Ratcliff battling in the final with the riders finishing in that order, with young Matty not dropping a point all day.
Division Five had seven riders into another close point scoring event with three riders in a run off to get into the sudden death final. Mathew Hurley(9), Jamie Lee Clee-Collins(9) and Joshua Carden(9) battling out for one spot in the final, Jamie Lee was the victor but then he had to fight Shayne Hoogmoed (16), Chris Mobray (15) and Jake Mathews (13).Shayne battled it out with Chris and Jake and Jamie Lee likewise but Shayne took the points from Chris, Jake amd Jamie Lee.
What most people think is the top 20 inch division is Division Four ( I'm not too sure ) yes it has the oldest riders and at times the most experienced 20 inch riders and it is the final 20 inch division before stepping up to a 26 inch bike. ( is one division title better than another - there's a start of a debate ). Robert Vella was missing after having nominated ( hopefully he is OK ) eight riders, a division in two halves with Robbie missing the powerful Shane Bentley battled it with Braden Makepeace, Patrick Evans and Angus Elloitt. With Marc Matrodomenico, Connor Wheelan , Andrew Wilkie and Damien Crawford who retired hurt fighting the for points left by the top four.Shane took the final from Braden, Angus and Patrick, Shane too powerful not dropping a point.
Girls Under 13 Division nine riders nominated with eight rider racing again a division in two halves but that may have something to do with the draw ( electronic ). Ebony Clarke from Murraylands showed true grit with starting with two firsts, a fall and restart gaining a second and a did not finish but still making the final with injury. This typifies what this sport is about and why this girls division is important, it shows that girls will fight when they believe the playing field is level. ( not intimidated by the smelly boys lol ). The other young ladies were Annabel Blaker, Jasman Hudson, Shiranta Aston, Monique Mathews, Jessica Snowden, Amy-Lee Hay who all raced well and Lindsay Jolly who typifies a all round cycle speedway rider, never giving up and the flagship for this division didn't drop a point taking out the Inaugural Girls Under 13 Division from Jessica Snowden, Ebony Clarke and Monique Mathews. Well done girls
Girls Over 13 Division another inaugural division at Salisbury, five riders in fighting for bragging rights but really it was a battle between Lucy Millikin (19) and Grabby Aston (16). Sarah Jayne Clee-Collins had a bad day with a bad fall in in race four on the concrete ( she had a bad fall last week also ) and as always the very likeable Jackie Kinross was in the mix coming third and Vicki Hedger making up the five. The final placing Lucy, Gabby, Jackie and sarah Jayne Clee-Collins. Well done Ladies
Nicole Kinross, Sarah Kinross, Michael Karpany and Mark Sheldon made up the Division Three, with Mark Sheldon from Murraylands holding court and Nicole, Sarah and Michael mixing the points behind him. The numbers were down, the Girls Over 13 Division took riders away from this division but where are the boys in this division, I know Salisbury has no Division three riders racing in this division those who are eligible are riding up.This was total points with Mark (20) from Michael (13) , Sarah (10) and Nicole (7).
Seven Riders on the track in Division Two with Daniel Bax and Dean Jolly missing at check in, I know Bobby McMillan was a bit concerned with Daniel and Dean missing but Josh Debattista, Jay Walters and Tony Bax ( yes Tony ) wasn't going to make it easy for Bobby. Ben Blaker, Scott Kinross and Tyrone Walters was also there to cause concerns maybe only in the first lap or two but had to be watched, Tyrone is showing some very good signs for the his future in the sport. The sudden death final was a bit of a surpise finish with Josh giving up and coming fourth with Tony third, Jay second and Bobby first.
Over Thirties had eight riders with a surprised Lee-Roy Collins was nominated in this division so next time he will fill in his own nomination form. Lee was far ahead of the rest but that did not deter the others Rick Jolly, John Hill, Darren Mathews (S), Darren Schultz , Darren Mathews (F) and Robert Fleming. I'm waiting for the day that the two Darren Mathews come out in identical outfits and bikes now that would even confuse their families I'm sure. Rick Jolly was thinking of pulling out to assist the Club with official duties but I'm glad he didn't because this Club man deserves this recognition on the track. The final finish was Lee-Roy Collins, Rick Jolly, John Hill and Darren Schultz.
Ten riders two five rider heats saw some very good racing in the Open division, a good lineup on display with Cody Chadwick, Cameron Crisp, Paul White, Matt Mathews, Ross Preist, Matthew Gentle, Ryan Edson, Daniel Thompson, Jarrod Weinert and Shane Weinert. These and a few more will be at the coming Australia Titles so we should have some top display of racing in the Aussie Titles. With five riders of this quality on the grid allowed for some good tussles into the first corners and some top tactical racing, the draw had some effect on the point scores with 13 points being the highest points into the sudden death final. Cameron, Matt and Daniel started well but then the draw mix and tussles on the track came into play. The sudden daeth final had Cody (13) , Ross (12), Matthew (10) and Paul (10) and that is the way it finished on the day.
It was good to see the Mayor of Salisbury Gillian Aldridge, Patron Tony Zappia, Vice Patron Pat St Clair-Dixon and her Partner Malcolm at the Club and we value their support of the Club and the sport of Cycle Speedway. The Club awarded the John Virgo Award on the day, John Virgo was a local bussiness ( Salisbury Caltex ) who supported and sponsored the Club for many many years to the point of telling the club if we get into trouble finding sponsors just come and see him and he will ease the load financial. The Club officials on the day awarded Monique Mathews the John Virgo award it was a hard decision that delayed the presentation of trophies, as there was many riders who had their names put forward but Monique showed that on the day she rode above herself and that is a major part of this award not just winning every race. Thank you all for a beautiful day's racing
Day in the Sun by Trevor Dutton
October long weekend and many families went away but due to this weekend being the only one available to the club for Growing for Gold come & try event, a race meeting was held. Twenty six youngsters signed but only a few turned up but this did not deter the Club and putting its best foot forward and show how the Salisbury Club can have some fun and display top cycle speedway. With around ten families missing 37 Salisbury riders hit the track with the Findon Hardy boys Trent and Jayden coming out to race along with five Growing for Gold riders brought 44 riders racing on a beautiful spring day.
The day was not without its thrills and spills, keeping Paul ( St Johns ) busy with Sarah - Jayne Clee-Collins and Annabel Blaker crashing , Michael Ratcliff hitting the track and getting a wheel in the face ( he was OK got up and raced ) among others. Sarah-Jayne went to hospital for a precautional check up but she returned to the Club at the end of the day OK with a bump on her head and a few scrapes and bruises.
Their was some good racing from the Tiny Tots right through to the Division One who showed how its' done on the track, Cody , Ryan, Jarrod, Lee, Brad, Jay and Tyrone raced handicap racing all day and it really allowed for some good close contact racing to showcase the sport. The Club ran some novelty races from two on a bike ( open to all comers ), I still cannot work out why Jake Kerley and myself didn't win, a no hands race for the experienced ( not me ) then 16 inch bike riders had a one hand race. to finish off there was a 20 inch one hand one foot race with Matthew Snowden showing all how it's done . ( correctly )
In amongst the racing and all the novelities there was a dance competition ( Yes that's right a dance competition ) not on bikes but in the centre green. We started with about 15 riders with the specators deciding who went into the finals, eight in the second round then the top two, Annabel ,Connor & Trent showed some good moves with hip hop style of dance but were voted out in the second round, the final was between Kaulem Parfilo and growing for gold rider Austin Pocock. It came down to who could perform under pressure and the scene was set by the music choice of Shake your tail feather by the Blues Brothers, it was a tight contest and right to the wire with the judge ( me) deciding a tie and each receiving $5.00s in prize money.
Back to racing the Growing for Gold riders adapted to the sport very well with young five year old Austin, Isaac Cranfield and Isaac Allington showing good skill first time out. Nikki Thomson raced well and improved greatly once on a cycle speedway bike, Damon Memen on a 26 inch bike raced with the seniors and Ben Blaker and took to the sport like a duck to water and showed graet promise. I hope all these riders enjoyed themselves and we see them back at the track.
Jessica Snowden took out Rider of the Week ( back to minus 4 - lol ) with Sarah- Jayne and Annabell grabbing the encouragement awards finishing a fun filled day in the sun.
Jets rein in Interclub number three but Comets take the Shield by Trevor Dutton
The Salisbury Jets won a tough battle at the LeFevre track Saturday the 15th August, going into this match the Comets had already won the Interclub Shield with two wins previous in this three match competition. There was some confusion in the Jets camp with the belief that the Interclub series was on total points but this was never the case, total points only comes into play if there is a draw over the series. The last time I remember total points came into play was when Murray Bridge was involved with four teams and each club having a bye, one year Findon had won two matches and Salisbury one so in the final match ( Interclub No. 4 ) Salisbury had to win the match and by six points greater than Findon. ( I think it was six points, I know it was close )
It was good to see Bill Rufus around the Club after his spell in hospital and we all hope all goes well for him in the future, now to the racing. There was some good racing in the younger bigrade with some impressive riding from the newer Division Seven Jets riders Thomas Jansen, Arden Weinert and Cody James adding 20 points to their team's score never giving up. The Dolphins Declan Playfair and Locke Pearce fought well along with Jackson Dobie and Karah Schultz from the Comets. Young Jets on the track
In Division Six the Jets Michael Ratcliff and Kaeden Langham fought well against the more experience fighters Todd Clarke from the Comets and the Dolphins Jack Norman who found a few extra pedals on the day.Along with the Dolphin girls Angel Corsaro and Accacia Pride with the Comets Jackson Dobbie In the making
The Jets Jake Mathews and Mathew Hurley were up against Todd Clarke ( who raced in two Divisions ) along with the Dolphins Chris Mowbray and Shiranta Aston who raced very well on the day. These Jets battled all day without giving up against the might of the opposition. Good effort
In Division four the Jets sent Lindsay Jolly, Braden Makepeace and Angus Elliot into battle against the Comets Shane Bentley , Braden Clarke and the Dolphins Andrew Wilkie and Chris Mowbray. The Comets Shane Bentley showed his class with three wins but in team racing of this type it is team points that count and the Jets used this to nullify the power of the Comets. A good consistent top effort impressive Jets
In the final four Divisions is the start of the Jets top guns coming into action, in saying this I'm not taking anything away from the other Jets riders who set the foundation for this win. Division Three saw Josh Debattista, Jay walter and Robbie Vella take maximum points (33 Pts ) from the Dolphins Gabby Aston, Michael Karpenny and Luky Millikin ( 17 Pts ) and Comets Nicole kinross and Sarah Kinross (12 Pts ). Jets in action what more can I say
Division Two was a dog fight with only two points separating the Jets from the Dolphins, the Jets Joel Chadwick, Daniel Bax and Matt Mathews (23 Pts ) from the Dolphins Robert Fitzpatrick and Ty Geertsen with the Comets Scott Kinross, Booby McMillan and Ross Priest (18 Pts ) Very entertaining racing
In the Seniors the Dolphins had Paul White and Robert Fleming (24 Pts ) on the track taking it to the Jets Nigel Greenhalgh and Lee Collins ( 26 Pts ) and the Comets Steve Clarke and Daren Schult (13 Pts ) . Fight as they may the Jets combination was just two points too good on the day in the battle and as in any team event every point won on the track builds onto the winning score. Old Jets never die
In Division One the Dolphins just got the upper hand in this two team battle with the Comets Ross Priest and Bobby McMillan ( 13 Pts ) not in the battle in this division. The Dolphins Cameron Crisp and Ty Geerstsen ( 26 Pts ) fought like Dolphins attacking sharks against the Jets Cody Chadwick and Matt Mathews ( 24 Pts ) Good fast entertaining racing
No excuses in this although Cody was feeling off colour earlier in the day, that was an observation only Jets not make excuses just promises we'll get the shield back next year.
Salisbury Jets 118 points - Lefevre Dolphins 166 points - Findon Comets 157 points
The Latest regarding the Adams' Oval Upgrade
After a joint meeting with the Salisbury Council and other clubs living on Adams Oval, we found that the Federal Grant money given to the Council allowed for building upgrades besides the upgrades mentioned previously. So all Clubs were given a task of bringing a wish list so the next meeting Wednesday the 29th of July so I will list a few things that the Salisbury Club brought to the table.
Upgrades Area and Utilities ( some of this is happening as part of the orginial upgrade )
There is a Plan "A" and Plan "B" for the building both plans stressed the need to upgrade the toilet facilities below is picture
s of one building proposal submitted to council. ( the council did say that toilet upgrades would happen )
This picture shows the club encompassing the option of taking over the SUJSC clubrooms and joining the building together
this picture shows a
enclosed veiwing area after joining the new and old clubrooms together on the track side
Another Building option was to only to join the new and old clubrooms and to extend the old clubrooms expanding he toilet facilities and add a bike workshop and storeroom, both options included the viewing area in the above picture.( I do not have a picture of this option) The next meeting with Council is around the 26th of August, and that is where the fun may begin with discussions concerning finer details and the Club's wish list will be discussed.
JOLLY GOOD SHOW By Trevor Dutton
From a wet and miserable night dawned a near bright sunny day for the 2009 Patron's Open Championship at Salisbury today. (13/06/09) Seventy riders turned out and turned on, a brilliant display of riding on a perfect track for Cycle Speedway, the day saw Karah Schultz ,Todd Clarke, Matthew Bryant, Shane Bentley, Cody Chadwick and Rick Jolly race through the day without dropping a point. Electronic Marble draws were used which made life easier for Pit Marshall Jade, it also gives the riders a chance to map out their races as they can see who they racing and from which grid position, but that was probably forgotten once the tape goes up.
The Clubs' foundation was there, in the Tiny Tots with three on trainer wheels and three without until Emma Nicholls decided today was the day the wheels come off and finished the last few races on two wheels. Well done Emma and in the last race her top speed was frightening to her father who was struggling to catch up. Young Robert Corsaro is a speedster to watch in the future along with Emily Makepeace, Jye Morollo, Kailem Parillo and Corey Munn whose speed picked up as the day progressed.
Division Seven saw some top competition through out the day but with Karah Schultz, Declan Playfair ,Aiden Weinert and veteran under seven Jackson Dobie showing the way in the heats. The sudden death final was Karahs' who showed the boys that she came to race winning from Declan, Jackson and Aiden.
Division Six heats had Todd Clarke, Matthew Snowden, Jake Kerley and Jack Norman picking up first in heats with much needed seconds and thirds to get into the final. Michael Ratcliff had a couple bad finishes that kept him out of the final along with Peter Morollo. The final had Todd, Jack, Matthew and Jake on the grid and when the tape went up past heats didn't count but the ability of Todd did taking the checkered flag from Jack, Jake and Matthew.
Total points racing in Division Fivewith five riders only saw Matthew Bryant lead all the way with max points from Shiranta Aston who impressed me all day with her commitment to her racing, with Jake Mathews and Mathew Hurley having a couple of battles in heats 2 and 3. Finishing with Matthew from Shiranti, Jake and Mathew followed by Joshua Carden
The biggest division on the day was Division Four which had thirteen riders jostling for points through out the heats. Shane Bentley stood out in the pack with maximum points in the heats. Robbie Vella only dropping one point in the heats and that against Shane in race 1of heat two, Braden Makepeace and Braden Clarke preformed well to gain births in the final. Shane continued in the final as in the heats, with Robbie finishing second from Braden Makepeace and Braden Clarke.
Michael Karpany was the odd man out in Division Three with the other four rider all being girls, and as all males know girls take no prisoners. Heat 1 had Lucy Millikin winning from Michael, Gabby Aston, Sarah Kinross and Nicole Kinross. After Heat 3 the scores on the sheet read 4, 5,6,7,8 and after heat 4 it read 6.7.8.9.10 so going into the final race was tight with Nicole winning from Gabby, Sarah , Michael and then Lucy after a ill fated inside move on Gabby. This lead to a run off between Michael and Gabby for second and third place respectively, Michael won the toss and took grid two and put Sarah on four. Michael gated well and lead all the way to take second place, leaving the final placings Nicole, Michael, Sarah and Gabby
Over Thirties a hard race to announce, as there was three Darrens, three Matthews, two Robs, one Schultz, one Rick and one Jolly between five riders. But it was a Jolly good day for Rick Jolly who lead every race for maximum points, his best race day ever. Rob Flemming couldn't catch him and he tried coming second in every race for fifteen points, next was Darren Schultz on ten points and Findon's Darren Mathews on five points followed by Salisbury's Darren Mathews.
Division Two saw some good battles on the track, with only four points between the finalists, a toss of the coin decided grid positions for joint heat winners Josh Debattista an Ty Geersten then allowing Dean Jolly and Boby McMillan to take their places. This was set for a good race and we were not disappointed but Ty prevailed over Josh, Bobby and Dean.
The Division One field had Daniel Pudney missing and maybe a few others but it didn't lose any excitement with the likes of Cody Chadwick, Matt Mathews, Ryan Edson, Cameron Crisp, Paul White Daniel Bax Nigel Greenhalgh, Jarrod Weinert and Jackie Kinross. The draw allowed for a mix that allowed points to be shared about but Cody doesn't share although he does play well with others. His maximum point scoring in the heats let the other battle it out for the points left over. The final was set with Cody, Paul, Matt and Cameron but once the tape flies up past deeds don't count so the battle began, per the heats Cody lead but Matt , Paul and Cameron tussled for positions with slid out slips and the like saw Cody first , matt second, Paul third and Cameron fourth.
A top days' racing by all and another successful Open Championship held by the Salisbury Club and members, a big thank you to Glynis, Cherry and canteen helpers, to Richard and his helpers on the BBQ, Kevin for a perfect track, Paul and his ST John team, Jade, Tammie, Lynda, Craig ,Kerry, Rob, Lyall , Darryl , the Referee etc for their effort on the day.
As you can see it takes many hands to put on a championship and just as many to run a Club so please if you can help just offer, even if it is just to give a tried old official a break.
I know at times your children's sport can take over family's life and it is nice to sit down and watch them participate but if we all sat and watched then there would be no affordable sport for our children or grand children. So if we all lend a hand through out the day then everyone can sit down for a while and watch, basically share the load, ask " Where's the rooster? " and grab a pen write down your name. If there is no rooster make one and write your name down, all Clubs need what I call Nike members " just do it members " be part of it make it happen even if the commitment is only a few hours a day or every other week :- Share the Load
JETS BREAKDOWN by Tammie Martin
The Jets had mechanical problems in the Interclub Round 1 competition at Findon on Sunday . Good day out with some exciting racing through out the day but bit of bad luck for the Jets with Joel snapping a crank at the starting gate and just a few races later Matt Mathews broke a pedal at the gate.
So disappointing that a point each from them would have had us drawing or possibly winning, but let's take nothing away from the Comets they took the opportunities on offer. Oh well, luck of the day I suppose, but the Jets will be back to soar in Round two.
The final scores were Findon Comets176 pts, Salisbury Jets 174 pts and Lefevre Dolphins152 pts

SALISBURY COUNCIL DECIDES
On Monday the 25th of May the full Council met and voted on the Adams Oval Upgrade which has most readers know that the Salisbury Club has been nervous about the Adams Oval Upgrade due to the absent of around the track parking missing on the Draft Plan.
True to their word the Council Staff lead by Nichola Kapitza and back by our North Ward Councillors Alex Coates and Linda Caruso have restored the Club's faith in the Salisbury Council and approved parking around the track .They have recognise the need for designated parking for St.John and will work through other issues in the coming weeks.
Below is the email sent to myself, the President Robert Hurley and Secrectary Craig Blaker
Dear Trevor, I am writing to inform you that the Adams Oval Masterplan passed through council last night without discussion.
The plan passed with the following motion from last week's Policy and Planning committee;
1. Council endorse the Adams Oval Master Plan.
2. Council authorise staff to undertake all works required for the implementation of the Adams Oval Master Plan project in accordance with the requirements as negotiated / specified under the Federal Government funding agreement.
3. The Master Plan be amended to allow the Salisbury Cycle Speedway controlled access to the car park around their track during competition events.
The motion was moved me and seconded by Linda and passed both the council and the committee unamously. Linda and myself have also agreed with Nichola that the first two carparks closest to Cycle Speedway in the 'soccer' carpark will be reserved for emergency vehicles and we will also have a space reserved in the trackside carpark close to the clubrooms for St John or SA Ambulance service.
Linda, myself and Nichola agreed on the carpark around your track being gated somehow to only allow access when the club is using the track as the other carpark being provided on Tangent Avenue will be open extended hours to allow parking for people using the reserve and playground for passive recreation.
The other concerns/issues you raised are all currently under investigation and staff will inform you of the outcomes as soon as possible.
Please do not hesitate to contact myself or Linda if we can be of any further assistance.
Many Thanks
Cr Alex Coates JP

FRIDAY NIGHT RACING by Trevor Dutton
Night racing at the Salisbury Club happens from time to time, at times during the summer months and at other times during the year due to team commitments either League or Interclub matches, last night was due to a League match at LeFevre Saturday.
A good turn out of 39 riders on a beautiful night for racing, all in fine spirits with Kevin Bickle in the middle refereeing , myself on the flags, Rob on the microphone, Lyle scoring , Craig in the office, Kerry looking after the bikes and as always Jade in the pits. With Glynis in the canteen as always with Rick, Tammie, Brunno and others helping her on the night, with Paul Carden our St Johns man on hand when needed, many thanks to all.
Friday Night does have its draw backs with the Tiny Tots numbers down, with only two riders Tyson Osbourne and Bree James, now these riders really enjoy their racing and if we could bottle their enthusiasm we would win all before us.I made an adjustment on the track on Bree's training wheel so after the drop of the flag she just sat there spinning her back wheel so with her pedalling and me pushing we completed two laps against Tyson, with Bree coming first, Tyson second and myself a buggered third in a non competetive division.
Seven Division saw four riders taking the track with some very good racing through out the night with Jacob Childs on 16 points although the the announcer pronouned Jacob as Dylan most of the night, taking the points. Next Thomas Jansen on 14 points, Aiden Weinert 10 points and Cody James 9 points.
Division Six had four riders with Jake Kerley ,Michael Ratcliff and Mathew Snowden finishing on 14 points, these three started in every race on the grid position so only the inside grid starting position determined what position they finished in. Newcomer Kyle Osbourne is improving each week and finished on 7 points.
Division Five had four ridersthe night went to back marker Dylan Childs on 17 points from Mathew Hurley who put in a good race meeting finishing on 12 points. Joshua Carden finshed on 9 points with two second places from Jake Mathews on 7 points, it was not Jake's night he seemed to struggle in the handicap races, then another newcomer jamie Clee-Collins on 5 points.
Division Four was down on numbers with only five riders on the night but Robbie Vella showed why he is becoming a stand out rider finishing on 19 points from Marc Mastrodenico on 11 points, Luke Childs 9, Braden Makepeace 6 and Connor Wheelan on 5 points.
Girls Division the strongest in numbers in the lower divisions, the Princess, no not Josh but Tiana Debattista took the night with 12 points from Jessica Snowden on 11 then Monique Mathew and Lindsay Jolly on 8 from Sarah-Jayne Clee-Collins and newcomer Jasman Hudson on 7 points then Annabel Blaker on 6 points. Race three saw Annabel take line honours in a much deserve win and in race four saw newcomer Jasman lead all the way for a win with the biggest smile I have seen in a while. Weell done to all the girls.
Numbers down in Division Three saw Ben Blaker racing in the Over Thirties and Josh Debattista race in the Division for competition. John Hill was back on the track aginst Darren Mathews and Ben with some good battles with Darren and Ben but it was John's night.
A very good turn out in Division One with nine riders ten with Josh Debattista, Adam Marino was back on the track although down on fitneess finished on 6 points with a couple of thirds. Matt Mathews with blonde hair finished the night on 18 points from Cody Chadwick on 16 from 4 races with his first race having his chain coming off. Next was Ryan edson who raced well with three firsts finshing on 15 points, Nigel Greenhalghand Jarrod Weinert both on 11 Damain Ffrench 8 and Shane weinert 7 points. Josh Debattista race well finishing on 20 points in his Division.
The Rider of the Week was a draw with Officials voting points given evenly to Robbie Vella and Thomas Jansen, top racing by both riders a well deserved award.
Dressage Hornets - Cody Chadwick, Orions- Annabel Blaker and Blackhawks -Luke Childs
COUNCIL COMMITTEE SUPPORTS CLUB by Trevor Dutton
The Salisbury Club has won round one with an amendment to the Adams Oval Master Plan that recommends that the Club is allow access during competition events.
It seams with the backing of the North Ward Councillors Linda Caruso and Alex Coates ( who emailed the Club giving his support before the meeting ) and Nichola Kapitza true to her word of reveiwing the situation, the Council and staff will recommended to council that parking around the track be allowed.
Following is the email from Nichola Kapitza straight after the Committee Meeting ............
Good evening Trevor
I have just walked out of the Committee meeting of Council at which the Adams' Oval Masterplan was presented. I am able to advise from that meeting the Committee has recommended to council that the Master plan be endorsed however with the amendment that the Cycle Speedway have controlled access to parking around the track during competition events. Please note however that this still has to be endorsed by Council next Monday evening.
The exact location of the entry and the form of treatment still has to be resolved. We are however looking at various options and the preferred one will be presented to the next meeting that we have with the users of Adams Oval.
I also need to advise that currently Cr Caruso is uncontactable by email due to technical difficulties.
I trust that this information will allay some of the concerns expressed by the club. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you require any further clarification in relation to this matter.

Rain keeps away and so do members by Trevor Dutton
Rain keeps away and so do members, Saturday the 16th of May started with a gloom over the track not only from sky but from the Salisbury Council meeting the previous evening. It rained while Kevin Bickle prepared the track Friday night and early Saturday morning, this is why numbers were down to 28 rider Saturday afternoon, I counted 25 regular riders missing.
The 28 riders who raced Saturday on a fast track prepared by Kevin raced in fine near sunny weather and enjoyed a top days racing.
For the Tiny Tots Tye Morrollo, Kailem Parfilo and Corey Munn showed the way with some energetic racing, with one lap times of Tye 15.96secs , Kailem 31.50 secs and Corey 35.59 secs with Kailem and Corey still on training wheels but not for long.
Division Seven had Aiden Weinert on 19 points leading from big improver Danielle Zaltron 15points then Thomas Jansen 10 points and Jayden Zaltron 3 points. I may be wrong but Jayden may have changed his bike or altered it but he was off his pace today.
Jake kerley lead the way on 16 points in Division Six followed by Mathew Snowden and Michael Ratcliff both on 13 points with Peter Morollo on 5 points and Kaeden Langham on 3 points
With numbers down Division Five and Four were joined although the riders retained their divisional points, this saw some good racing. For Division Five Mathew Hurley on 18 points just kept out Jamie- Lee Clee-Collins on 17 points and in Division Four on the day Marc Mastrodenico on 17 points from Braden Makepeace 16 points than Conner Wheelan 12 points.
The Girls Division down by three riders still saw five girls racing to a very high entertaining level all day with back marker Lindsay Jolly on 16 points from Jessica Snowden and Sarah-Jayne Clee- Collins both on 15 points, followed by new rider Jasman Hudson 3 points and Annabel Blaker after a hard fall on 2 points.
The sole Over Thirty rider Rick Jolly ( 20 points ) joined the Division Two riders for some good racing which saw Rick's son Dean gather 17 points on the day from Josh Debattista 10 points, Jay Walters 7 points followed by Tyrone Walters and Michael Bouhalis both on 6 points.
Division One saw 6 riders perform onthe track with some good fast tight racing, with shared points giving low scoring Daniel Bax on 12 points lead the way from Ryan Edson 11 points, Joel Chadwick 9 points after a fall, cracked frame and possible injury to his hand to be x-rayed . Damain Ffrench still out there which is good to see him enjoying his racing on 7 points from Jarrod Weinert 6 points and Cody Chadwick on an enjoyable 6 points, I suspect Cody was there for fun and fitness on the day.
Awards on the day saw the Honets Mathew Hurley, Orions Annabel Blaker and Blackhawks Lindsay Jolly take the Dressage and from memory the Rider of the Week was Aiden Weinert
Editor' Note : It is good to see riders out on the track racing and wearing different colourful racing tops whether English or Australia tops from recent tour but what is needed is more riders wearing their Club Team tops to show Club pride and colors.
SALISBURY COUNCIL DISRESPECTS CLUB by Trevor Dutton
Over many years the Salisbury Club has been attending meetings regarding the Adams Oval Upgrade and at all these meetings Council Officers involved have stated that access and parking around the track was not a concern or issue. And at all these meeting assurances were given and that Salisbury Cycle Speedway Club was always part of the Adams Oval development.
Then on Friday the18th of May at a Council organised meeting the Salisbury Council dropped a bombshell that access and parking around the track was not on the Adams Oval final draft, weak excuses were given and assurance that they would look into it. But with the draft plan going to a Council Committee Monday the 18th of May then Full Council the following Monday the Club has lost faith in the Salisbury Council after working hand in hand with the Salisbury Council on various project over many years.
The club has sent E-mails to the Council Project Manager Nichola Kapitza ( who chaired the meeting ) , North Ward Councilors Linda Caruso , Alex Coates ( who will attend the committee meeting on the 18th of May ) and to the Club's Patron and Federal MP Tony Zappia to address this total lack of consultation.
Following is the text of those emails............. CC to Councilors Linda Caruso , Alex Coates
Nichola
Salisbury Cycle Speedway has concerns from the Adams Oval Upgrade meeting held at the Council Chamber 4 .30pm Friday 15/05/09 and believe that this need to be put in writing again.
1/ No provision for parking around the Salisbury Cycle Speedway Track
At all meetings between the Council and Salisbury Cycle Speedway Club since day one, the Club had been assured verbally that parking around the track was not an issue or concern. And the reason it was not on the draft plan was just that it was not a concern, on many occasions the Club requested that it be included in the plan or in writing but again the Club was told it was not a concern.
This has been the only major concern we have had regarding the Adams Oval Upgrade and have worked with the Council in a conciliatory manner at all meetings and again was assured that the parking around the track was of no concern not an issue for Council.
Salisbury Cycle Speedway has never been in debt to the Council and has always a very good working relationship with Council and at all times keeps its clubrooms and area in good order. The Club even built its' new clubrooms with grant monies at minimal cost to the Council and at no times did it make any alterations without approval from Council giving the Council a valuable asset for the future.
With the final draft presented one working day before it will be presented to a Council Committee and eight days before it would be presented to full Council, it does leave the Club wondering why our concerns were not taken into account many months if not years before and we feel betrayed by the Council over this matter.
The Council reasoning that controlling children and cars within park area , leaves the club wondering why this is not a concern with the parking around the soccer pitches within the park.
The reasoning that compacting of grassed area would not leave the park in a pristine condition does not come into it as the Club and the Local Community have always requested seal surface for that area around the Track , again from the first Community meeting and thereafter.
The Club was given permission in writing from Council and over the years the Council have built up and graded the roadway around the track also placing a gate on the Tangent Ave. entrance with the Club paying for the invert.
After the recent World Internationals held in February at the Track the Club's membership has grown two fold and at the State Titles held at the track on May the 2nd there was 95 competitors and even with the cars around the track there was a need for overflow parking. Even with the Tangent Ave car park there would not be enough close by parking as many of the sport's competitors have bikes on their cars so the need to have parking around the track and visible close by parking is a must. ( Tangent Ave Car Park )
The impact of not having parking around the track would greatly affect current members and impact on future members of the Club, with many of our members having young infants where the car can be used for sleeping infants with the parents close by. This could impact on our current and future membership with Salisbury being the only Cycle Speedway Club without parking around the Track.
The parking area around the track could be paved around the trees to give a more appealing atmosphere and can be use to control water drainage of the area, there are many ways for this area to be considered if the Club's concerns were not dismissed as not an issue or concern and totally disregarded.
It should possible to have a sealed roadway and parking around the track starting from the end or centre of the car park closest to Tangent Ave. with a gate at that point which could be controlled the Club.
2/ No Emergency Vehicle designated parking
We think this should be reconsidered as the Club does have St John at all its events and on occasion they have been called upon to attend soccer players.
We believe that two spaces for Emergency Vehicles ( one Police , one St John ) could be provided directed behind the Club's Clubroom, we understand that these vehicles would have cross a footpath but this should have minimum impact for the maximum benefit.
Maybe a loading zone car park for our Club's Canteen Manager in this area also as parking has been pushed to the maximum distance from our club.
3/ Drainage Concerns
These concerns have been discussed with the Council over many years, with the Maintenance Department doing minimum and temporary fixes due to their concerns of any permanent fix impacting on the Adams Oval Upgrade. Because of the drainage problem the track had to be graded late last year and the starting grid replaced before we held the World Internationals in February this year by the Council.
We believe these drainage problems would also impact on the car parking area closest to Tangent Ave.
4/ Connecting Bore Water to the Club
This has been mentioned at previous meetings with David, he has discussed this with the relevant department within Council, it would be the most practical time to allow the club access to bore water for watering its track and centre green of the track. Even if it was only to the corner of our clubroom closest to the Bore, the Club could do the final connection to minimize cost to the Council.
6/ Another concern is the area around the sides and back of our Clubrooms, whether this is to be sealed / paved etc., we were under the impression that this would be discussed with the Club once the main upgrade plan was approved. Allowing one on one discussions between individual clubs and the Council regarding their buildings and adjacent areas within their lease, but after the lack of concern for our one major concern we are lacking faith in this process .
Please do not hesitate to contact the club regarding this matter to get a positive outcome for all involved.

Dear Tony
As Patron of our Club, Federal Member of Parliament and former Mayor of the City of Salisbury, it is necessary to relay Salisbury Cycle Speedway's concerns over the Adams Oval Upgrade. I know from past discussions regarding the Adams Oval Upgrade you have been passion supporter of the Salisbury North Community and Sporting Clubs in the area, in particular to the Adams Oval precinct.
On the whole the upgrade has very good features and will a asset to the Local Community and sporting tenants but our concerns that sealed parking around the track and access from Tangent Ave. have been disregarded and through out the consultation process the Club was assured this was not an issue or concern.
The final draft presented to the Club Friday the 15th of May had none of the Clubs' concerns or issues in it and when raised at this meeting weak excuses were given and with we will look into it , this draft is to be sent to a committee Monday the 18th of May then full Council the following Monday for approval.
In the twenty plus years I have worked with the Salisbury Council, I have never encountered a situation where the Council has not fully consulted with the Club over any issue. It was stated at the meeting that a start and finish deadline applied, I believe this is because of the Federal Funding for the development, if this is true then maybe this fast tracking process is partly to blame.
But even so I can not believe the Salisbury Council and its' staff would verbally assure the Club at every meeting over many years that the Club's only major concern was not a problem and then totally disregard those concerns without consultation.
I have attached the Adams Oval Concept Master Plan presented to the Club at Friday's Meeting as you will see all concerns and issues from other stake holders have been addressed but no ours. EG: extra pitches , parking, traffic etc.
Below is the text that has been sent after Friday meeting to Nichola Kapitza Project Manager, Linda Caruso North Ward Councilor and Alex Coates North Ward Councilor which lays out our concerns.
If possible the Club would like you contact the Council regarding our concerns below and initiate a consultation meeting or a reassurance that these matters can be and will be addressed before final decision by Council.
Regards Trevor & Chris Dutton On behalf of Salisbury Cycle Speedway Inc. Something to think about - A clear conscience is usually the sign of a bad memory.
Editor' Note: I have been involved in all meetings between the Club and the Salisbury Council including the First Open Community Meeting many years ago and it is this reason the Club have allowed me to follow through on this matter.Because of the urgency and deadlines I have been working closely with Salisbury President Robert Hurley before any correspondence is sent and with his instructions.
The Concept plan presented at the meeting on Friday the 15th of May.

Rain Rain Don't go away by Trevor Dutton
The rain arrives but this didn't dampen the riders spirits for a Friday night racing meeting with 34 riders turning out for good night of racing. The people of South Australia have been waiting for rain for many years, good rain falls that is with the state of our water resourses at a all time low, with the rain comes mixed feelings because you still want to race. It looked like maybe the race meeting may be called off but the rain stayed away for the entire race meeting even allowing for a time trail on a perfect track prepared by mother nature herself.
Three Tiny Tots Emma Nicholls, Cody James and Trent Hardy raced the night away with Emma clocking 31.24sec. and Cody reaching 18.29sec. in the time trail.
Division Seven had six riders saw Danielle Zaltron 13pts ( 14.92sec ) from Jacob Childs 12pts ( 13.94sec ) Jayden Zaltron 12pts ( 14.67sec ) , Thomas Jansen 9pts ( 16.03sec ), Aiden weinert 3pts 919.9sec ) and Daniel Nicholls 1pts ( 16.95sec )
Dicision Six three riders braved the night with Mathew Snowden 16pts ( 12.85 sec ) from Michael Ratcliff 14pts ( 13sec ) and Jayden Hardy 13pts (14.66sec )
Division Five saw Dylan Childs 18pts win from Jake Mathews (12.33sec ) and Joshua Carden (13,43sec ) both on 11pts with Matthew Hurley on 8pts (13.7sec )
Division Four five rider turned out with Robbie Vella 16pts (10.91 sec ) from Luke Childs 14pts , Connor Wheelan 8pts (12.11sec ), Marc Mastrodomenico 6.5pts (12.49sec ) and Angus Elloit 5.5pts (11.9sec )
Girls Division had four girls showed the way with Jessica Snowden 17pts (12.63sec ) who raced well all night taking the Rider of the Week well deserved. With Annabel Blaker 12pts ( 12.69sec ) taking second followed by Monique Matthews 11pts ( 12.52sec ) and Tiana Debattista 10pts
I have no scores for the following I left my glasses home and when I photocopied the score sheet Icopied the centre sheet twice missing the last page,. I do apploigise to all.
Over Thirties saw the Matthews' Three battle it out with Darren Matthews, Rob Matthews and Darren Matthews yes two Darren Matthews, it was the battle of the Mathews with all three having black frames, silver rims and of course the same surname.
Division Two had Ben Blaker, Frank Krember, Michael Bouhalis and Josh Debattista mixing it with Ryan Edson and Jarred Weinert from Division One . I do remember Ryan getting 9.99 seconds in the time trail which relates to 31.7 Kpm based on a perfect 26 inch ride line of 88 metres.
Some riders missing due to Cody Chadwicks Birthday party - Happy Birthday Cody alsoHappy Birthday to Emma Nicholls (14/4 ), Ryan Edson (19/4 ) , Sarah Jayne Clee-Collins (24/4 )
Dressage Hornets - Matthew Snowden, Orions- Annabel Blaker and Blackhawks -Marc Mastrodomenico
Note:- If you wish to convert your time trail time to Kpm just do the following 3600 ÷ your time x .088 = Kpm remember this is based on a 88 metre ride line ( a 26 inch ride line measured on the Salisbury track )

Mathew's Day by Trevor Dutton
Once a year the Club celebrates the winner of the President Medal Winner from the previous year, this is a Closed Championship to honour a rider who had acheived the respect of Club Officials over a racing season.( Click here to see how it works )
Today saw fifty Club riders honour young Mathew Snowden on his achievement last year, yes fifty riders who
showed all who watched what Cycle Speedway is all about. At a Closed Championship riders race as per a normal race meeting, that is two scratch and three handicap races giving all riders a chance to win a trophy, where in an
Open Championship they may not. The sport of Cycle Speedway in its simple form is about racing bicycles on a short circuit track with no brakes and fixed gearing but a Club is much more, today we saw a club honour a rider who
won the second highest Club honour and he was under seven years of age at the time. We al
so saw a very large
Easter raffle with 26 prizes, a colouring competetion for the young members of the club and an atmosphere that was enjoyable to be involved in.
Six Tiny Tots raced on the day and all never missed a race although Kailem was late due to finishing colouring in his picture. Tyson Osbourne, Jye Marrolo, Lailem Parfilo, Cody James, Emma Nicholls and Corey Munn raced like demons ( good demons) and was a handicappers nightmare.( all top scorers )
Division Seven saw four riders show their stuff with Aiden Weinert 16 pts from Jacob Child on 15pts , Danielle Zaltron 12 pts and Thomas Jansen on 7.

Kyle Osbourne took out Division Six on 12 points, with a run off between Jake Kerley and Peter Morollo who finished on 10 pts each, the run off on handicaps saw Jake take second place from Peter. Michael Ratcliff on 9 pts was not far behind followed by Holly Greenhalgh, Mathew Snowden.

Back marker Dylan Child finishing on 15 pts showed why he gives 20 bike lengths to the front marker, followed by Jake Matthews on 13 pts , Jamie -Lee Collins 12 pts and Matthew Hurley 2 pts ( injured )

Eight Riders showed for Division Four, another stuff division to handicap, 2007 President's Medal winner Robbie Vella won on 19 pts . Another run off between Luke Child and Marc Mastrodomenico for second and third ended with fast racing between Marc and Luke but in a valiant effort by Luke on the last turn saw him hit Marc's back wheel and go down. Marc finishing second, Luke third followed by Connor Wheeler, Austin McDonald, Braden Makepeace, Angus Elliot and Ryan Greenhalgh. ( Robbie was not available for the photo )
The Sunshine Brigade
sorry the Girls Division seven riders put on a display of top riding today with back marker
Lindsay Jolly showing the way on 17 pts followed by Sarah-Jayne Clee-Collins, Monique Matthews, Tiana Debattista, Annabel Blaker, Jessica Snowden and Whitney Jones.
Over Thirties years ago it was called the Veterans it was changed to reflect its true nature dads wanting to show their kids how it is done, only joking parents wanting to keep fit. Three turned out today with Darren Mathews on 18 pts taking it from Rick Jolly 16 pts and Frank Jones on 11 points.
Division Two a very hard field to handicap saw another run off for first and second between
Michael Bouhalis and Josh Debattista both on 13 pts, Josh gave Michael 16 bike lengths in
the run off but just couldn't catch Michael going to the line and you have to give Michael his dues he rode a very good line not allowing Josh the
opportunity coming out of the last turn. Finishing Michael Bouhalis, Josh Debattista, Dean Jolly 13pts, Jay walters, tyrone Walters and Ben
Blaker.
Yet another run off in Division One, Cody Chadwick and Ryan Edson both finishing on 19 pts excited the crowd with a fast tacical race with
the lead changes over the four laps. Ryan coming out on top over Cody with Nigel Greenhalgh 16 pts third from Tony Bax 11 pts, Damian Ffrench 11 pts Jarrod Weinert 10pts Daniel Ffrench 8
pts.
Two encouragement Awards were given out on the day to Holly Greengalgh and Angus Elliot who had a horror day with his chain coming off. ( Angus was not available for the photo )
As you can see by the number of run offs the racing was close and that is what handicap racing is all about, OK some times it does not work out but it depends on the riders on the day. What the handicapper tries to do is not make a rider win but make the racing as close as possible and in Cycle Speedway the horsepower on the bike varies race to race.
On the track it may not have been Mathew's day but I know that Mathew would like to thank all the riders for celebrating his day and the Club thanks all its members in supporting Mathew's Day.
Th
e following is a transcript of a speech delivered by Tony Zappia MP Federal Member for Makin
in the House of Representatives Canberra on the 25th of February 2009
International Cycle Speedway Federation World Championships
Mr ZAPPIA (Makin) (7.43 pm) — During the month of February the International Cycle Speedway Federation held its 2009 world championships in South Australia. Events were held at the Salisbury, Lefevre, Murraylands and Findon cycle speedway tracks. The main event, the World Cycle Speedway World Cup, was held on Saturday. 21 February at the Salisbury Cycle Speedway Track. Riders from the USA, England, Ireland, Wales, Scotland, Poland and Australia competed for the world cup.
On the day, the member for Wakefield and I attended the championships, which included the women's international, the junior world cup and the men's open class world cup. The women's event was won by Nikki Kinross of Australia, the junior event was won by the Australian team, and for the first time ever the Australian team won the men's open class world cup — finishing just ahead of the favourites, Poland. It was an incredibly intense competition with and spills. Notably, the events were all free admission to the community, and not surprisingly a huge crowd turned out to watch the world cup events.
I take this opportunity to congratulate all of the riders who, at the completion of the racing, like true sportspeople, celebrated each other's performances. I congratulate all of the winners, in particular the winners of the senior world cup — the Australian riders Daniel Pudney, Cody Chadwick, Cameron Crisp and Robert Fitzpatrick. They did our country proud.
Cycle speedway racing is not a mainstream sport and therefore receives little public recognition . It is, however, a sport that is all inclusive, providing opportunities for men and women right through from tiny tots to older members of the community. Because it is not a mainstream sport in Australia, the local clubs in South Australia are very much dependent on the efforts of volunteers. For some years I have been associated with the Salisbury Cycle Speedway Club, having been introduced to the sport by club stalwarts Trevor and Chris Dutton, and I can speak with personal knowledge about the work of the management committee, the officials, the volunteers and the families who sustain that club. Their organisational skills ensured that the running of the world championship events went like clockwork. It was testimony to both their hard work and their professionalism.
The Salisbury Cycle Speedway is not located in an affluent community, but what the club lacks in finances is more than offset by the richness of the spirit of the volunteers and families who have sustained the club for over 50 years. In doing so. they have enabled over the years thousands of young people to participate in a healthy recreational activity that just about every young person likes to do, whilst at the same time teaching young people better bike-riding skills. I congratulate them for all of their efforts.
GIRLS IN CYCLE SPEEDWAY by Trevor Dutton
The Salisbury Cycle Speedway Club has started a Girls Division this year and in the after Easter
will be advertising in newspapers, school newsletters and Community Radio for girls to join the sport of Cycle Speedway. The Club will used a $2,000.00 grant from the Department of
Recreation and Sport " Move it " program to increase the numbers of girls at the club competing in Cycle speedway. Past and present girls have returned to the sport since Salisbury introduced
the Girls Division some after a one to five year internal, it was just what they were waiting for , they dropped out as they progressed due to the boys being stronger and more physical, the fun of competetion was lost to them.
The new enthusiasm shown by the girls not only is shown on the track but around the club, they smiling faces are infectious. I spoke to the girls before their second race and asked if they enjoyed the Girls Division and why, they answered in chorus YES , they enjoyed the even racing ( they still want to win ), the fun back in their racing, that boys are mean (lol) and they want more girls to join them.
The Club believes that the Girls Division will allow more girls to stay in the sport, in t
he past the girls were dragged along to watch their brothers race and the only opportunity was to race
against boys. The new girls coming into the sport will have a chance to develop their skills at a level that suits them and not be intimidated by the boys. New girls to the sport may bring
their brothers with them which would be a bonus the the Club and new family.
In Australia Cycle Speedway is a family orientated sport that allows riders to compete at the highest level, but it also allows riders who can not or do not wish to race at the highest level compete, the best of both worlds for the active family. The Club would probably run a Girls Division in their Club run Open Championships and if the Girls Division works then hopefully other Clubs may take up the cause for Girls in Cycle Speedway.
BACK TO THE FUTURE by Trevor Dutton
Numbers around 34 rode the track at Salisbury today a good number considering that it's the Calypsal 500 V8 racing in Adelaide so some riders and members were missing, a quick count by Cody Chadwick and myself had 24 semi regular and regular riders missing not counting volunteers.
So it was all hands on deck to cover regular Officials away, this saw Nigel Greenhalgh on the mircophone, Brian Chadwick scoring, Kevin Bickle on Flags ( although Ben and Annabel assisted as required) Rick Jolly as Referee ( his normal job), Craig Blaker assisted earlier with the track preparation with Track Manager Kevin Bickle and myself in the pits. This took me back 22 plus years to the first job I had at the Club Pit Marshall, the big difference today is that the riders are well behaved, know when their race was due, all credit must go to Jade, Salisbury's Pit Marshall she has these riders trained and they train the new riders to keep the wheels turning.
New riders were about on the day and they fitted in well to the racing and are keen to come out Tuesday night training, to learn more. The more it changes the more it stays the same, some old riders / members return maybe the fire was re-lit by the tour but it was good to see Damain Ffrench back on the 26 inch bike and he started as a Division 7 on a 16 inch bike. Then there is Jarrod Weinert another pass rider who started on a 16 inch bike, his sister Sarah-Jayne Clee- Collins who started as a Tiny Tot,and young Jamie-Lee Clee-Collins who I remember Sarah-Jayne towing him around the track before he learnt to pedal is now on a 20 inch bike.( and with them comes their nephews and cousins Aiden Weinert ,Tyson Osborne ,Kyle Osborne and Thomas )
Maybe it's me but the atmosphere around the track took me back to the nineties, maybe due in part to the old names riding around the track ( their faces have changed slightly so has mine ) or is it just because the atmosphere / feel / vibe / enviroment / mood / character called it what you like, felt right, let's hope the Club and its' members can maintain it.
In the pits you see and hear many things and my lips are sealed on most but nothing has really changed the riders in Tiny Tots a non competitive division still wants to win and don't understand handicapping. What I did see and hear was Cody Chadwick ( the number two rider in the world ) console and encourage these riders, he spoke to their mothers, of his younger days of tantrum and spitting the dummy because of not winning, he encouraged them to enjoy the racing and to come out to Tuesday night training. This took me back to my sons' early racing days where Niel Toye and others did the same thing for him , that's what is lacking in this world, old fashion values, mentoring of the young in sport by their peers, yes, this does take me Back to the Future. So I beleive if this additude of Cody's filters down and up within the Club - its' Future is assured.
OK by now you are thinking the old boy has forgotten about the racing, well I haven't although, when you are in the pits with marble draws and getting riders in line you do miss some races.
In Tiny Tots only two riders Jye and Tyson Osborne with Jye doing two laps to Tyson's one did see some tears but with some encouragement from mum and others things will improve for Jye. I don't think anything worrys Tyson he must get that from his mother.
Division Seven saw six riders take to the track Kaeden ( 16pts ), Thomas ( new rider 4pts ), Aiden Osborne( 6pts ) , Jacob Childs (19pts ), Jayden ( 6pts ) and Danielle another new rider who had a fall but got back on her bike to race in the last heat. top effort - "Go girl" that's my last quote from Oprah.
Division Six quite a few riders missing but some good tight racing saw Peter ( 18pts ), Kyle Osborne( 13pts ) and Jake Kerley on 12 points. ( Jake missed the last heat ) I can see some good battles on the track between Jake and Peter.
Division Five, Dylan Childs ( 20pts ) back and showing he hasn't lost any speed giving his nearest rival 8 bike lenghts in the handicap racings. Matthew Hurley raced well for 13 points with Jamie-Lee Clee-Collins finishing on 11 points.
Seven riders in Division Four, number one child, child the eldest, Luke Child ( 15pts ) on the track with Robbie Vella ( 14pts ) a good strong competetion between these riders is just what they need to push them along. And with that the other riders in that division will improve Marc Mastrodomenico ( 10pts ) Braden Makepeace ( 8pts ), Ryan Greenhalgh ( 8pts ), Billy Bax ( 6pts )and Connor Wheeler ( 6pts ).
The Girls Division saw Lindsay Jolly take on the field for maximum point wins from Sarah-Jayne Clee-Colloins ( 14pts ), Monique Matthews ( 9pts ) and Annabel Blaker (7pts ). These girls raced, smiled and entertained all with their efforts on the track and the Pit Marshall favourite division always ready and in a straight line. "Go girls" ( ooppps )
Division Two had Jay Walters ( 20pts ) in it due to he being the only Division Three riders on the day. Jarrod Weinert ( 17pts ) is slowly finding his legs, the battle on the track was between Ben Blaker, Michael Boughless and Tyrone Walters all finishing on 11 points.
Division One or Open call it what you want saw some good tussles on the track with dives, passes ,bumps etc. which added enjoyment to the racing. Cody Chadwick ( 20pts ) showed why is number two in the world with beautiful movement on the track. His brother Joel ( 13pts ) raced well with only one bad race.Daniel Bax ( 8pts ) was always in the mix, Danian Ffrench stayed on his bike for three races and picked up 6 points, he will improve with track time. Last but not least Tony Bax (3pts ) this rider enjoys himself on and off the track and when he wants too he can mix it with the best.
Note:- I have left some last names out due to them being new riders so I will endeavour to catch up with their parents and add their surnames at a later date.
AFTER THE PARTY'S OVER by Trevor Dutton
Well the the World Tour events are well and truly over and the debriefing or what is commonly called complaining has started, from the media/promotion side of things ( how it could have been much better or should've been better, everyone an expert after the fact but no volunteers before hand) to the performance of GB riders , their training , the time of year the event was staged ( which was not decided by ACSC ) and of course the referees etc.
From my point of view and I would suggest from the Australians' point of view also the tour was a great success, and as I have already written the Salisbury Club did itself proud. But like all the World Tours before it, after the farewell party comes the reality that the clubs must get back into what we called normal racing, maybe after the hectic days and nights of the tour it may feel a little like a time of rest but not for the Officials and volunteers of the Clubs.
It doesn't stop just because the Tour has left, this is the near the start of our racing season, ten months of it, so all Australian Clubs are back where it started at the grass roots of the sport - local racing. The Salisbury Club has settled back into reality with new and old riders returning to the Salisbury track ( which is very good to see ) and the Club has decided to start a Girls Division, this was talked about in late 2007 early 2008 but no decision was made. The Club saw girls dropping out of the sport as they progressed into higher divisions and with the strength and competitive nature of the boys it did not help in retaining the girls.
Last Friday they started the Girls Division and this week eight girls raced and they enjoyed it, the riders were Jessica Snowden, Monique Matthews, Holly Greenhalgh, Annabel Blaker, Whitney Jones, Sarah-Jayne Clee-Collins, LindsayJolly and Tiana Debattista, the start of things to come I hope.
Late 2007 the Club applied for a grant to develop the Girls Division ( the "Move it Grant " to get girls involed in sport ) to be honest as Grants Officer I forgot about it due to the Club getting another grant for the track fencing and the Tour etc. In the movie Field of Dreams the voice said " build it and they will come" so the Salisbury Club has built it.
So shortly the Club will be advertising in the papers to get more girls involved in the sport of Cycle Speedway, the grant allows the Club to offer free membership and free racing fees for a three month period to encourage girls to paticipate in the sport. The bonus for the Club is not only getting more girls and their families active in the sport and Club but the girls may bring their brothers to the sport.
The plan hopefully if the Girls Division is a success at Salisbury it may evolve at other Clubs, and maybe the girls of the sport will lead the way in the future.
ECONOMIC DOWNTURN HITS TOUR by Trevor Dutton
The economic downturn world wide has impacted on 2009 World Tour, with the announcement that USA will not have a team, they will have 1 rider who will be competing in the Junior World Individuals
This means that the Junior World Best Pairs at Murraylands will not take place due to insufficient entries. So changes to the Tour Calendar will be as follows Murraylands will now hold the Senior Best Pairs at 12noon followed by a Local meeting (which should start around 1-30pm). Overseas riders and riders from other clubs are welcome to take part.
Junior World Cup at Salisbury will be between England and Australia using the 6-man Test Match formula and the Senior World Cup will be: England, Australia, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and Poland.
As for the Junior World CLUB Best Pairs at LeFevre: As we have 8 teams there is no need to have eliminations heats on Friday Feb 20th therefore I have replaced with 'Local Club Meetings' at Findon LeFevre (Overseas riders welcome). Salisbury may not a hold a Local Meeting (due to Jets vs Sheffield Stars match that night and World Cups next day) to be announced
The Final of the Junior CLUB Best Pairs to start at 3pm instead of 3-30pm as with 8 teams I think it will take longer than 1 hour to run
Please see Calendar for Changes All times and dates are correct at time of publishing
JETS AGM by Trevor Dutton
Yes that time of the year, the 2008 season has one race meeting left before the Christmas break and the return for the 2009 Racing Season on the 31st of January. There will be a couple of working bees in between the first the weekend of January 10th to 11th 2009, both a Saturday and Sunday 9.30am start, the second Sunday the 18th of January as a final tidy up before racing starts.
New faces on the committee with a return of some old faces which is always a good mix within a committee. The first seven are elected members who made up the executive committee all non paid volunteers, the others volunteers again non paid hold Official positions during the season. This does not stop other members offering to assist these volunteers on race days or at any time to give these people a break through out the season, the Club is always looking for assistants for Officials on a normal race day or Championship day. - So Volunteer your services from time to time.

THE JETS SQUADRON LOSES WINGS BUT LANDS SAFELY By Trevor Dutton
Date:- Saturday 8th of November, the day Father Christmas came to town
Time:- 14.00 hours , overcast with a slight chilly wind forecasted
The Mission:- Division Four League Final over neutral territory, at the LeFevre Track
The squadron gathered with its support crew to battle the Findon Comets, who were fired up for the event, the selected squad was Captain Josh Debattista, Braden Makepeace, Robbie Vella, John Stevenson, Luke Childs and Billy Bax. The opposition had selected Captain Shane Bentley, Todd Clarke, Patrick Evans, Brayden Clarke, Trent Forester and battle harden and ever ready Nicole Kinross. Some of the squad had just come back from excorting Father Christmas into town safely and now had to get ready for the real game, for position on the sheet the Jets lost to toss but won the toss for position on the grid and selected grids 1 and 3 first up.
In heat one the Jets Captain Josh Debattista lost his wing man at the start with Braden Makepeace excluded for moving, the restart had Josh against two Comets, the fast young turk Patrick Evans and battle harden Nicole Kinross subbed in for Todd Clarke , a two to one fire fight. The powerful Jets captain gave his all at the start and lead the race with Nicole in hot pursuit, with Josh taking the checkered flag but the Comets the points overall.
Heat two saw the Comets captain Shane Bentley scout ahead from the the Jets Robbie Vella and John Stevenson with the Comets Brayden Clarke covering fourth, giving even points score, keeping the one point lead to the Comets.
The Jets position five rider Luke Childs teamed up with Braden Makepeace to battle Patrick Evans and Trent Forester , as they settled in at the gate nerves again hit and the Ref excluded young Braden at the start. The grids 1 and 3 were starting to look like being jinxed for the Jets, the two to one battle was to be fought again with the experienced Jet Luke up to the task, grabbing four points but Patrick and Trent picking up five giving the Comets a two point buffer 15pts to 13pts.
Heat four had the Jets from grids 2 and 4 with Josh Debattista and Robbie Vella against Brayden Clarke and Nicole Kinross again subbed in for Todd Clarke. This race started with tactics within the first ten pedals then the Ref called for all to speed up and the Jets were off allowing them to gain maximum points, the much needed points. with Josh being the gunner ( blocking ) for Robbie and the Comets Brayden Clarke and Nicole Kinross finishing in that order. Now the Jets are two points up 20pts to 18pts.
Heat Five grids 1 and 3 will the jinxed grids hurt the Jets, the Comets had their young turks Patrick Evans and Trent Forester in the seats ,the Jets brought out John Stevenson and experience gunner Luke Childs. They settled in and all waited to see what the grid Gods would bring, the tape went up and no whistle so the after burners fired and the Jets beat the jinx and brought home maximum points. Giving a six point margin going into the sixth heat.
The Jets' Braden Makepeace was subbed out for Billy Bax who winged for Josh Debattista against the Comets captain Shane Bentley and Brayden Clarke, the two captain finally meet but this was short lived. Again the Ref excludes a rider and yes he was on grid one Shane Bentley leaves the grid early courtesy of the Ref, has the jinxed grid shifted to the Comets ? Now the Comets have the two to one battle and Brayden Clarke gives his all but Josh takes the four points, Brayden three and Billy two. Half time scores 33 pts to 24 pts, the Jets by nine.
Heat seven the second half and the jinxed had shifted or had it? The Comets sub in Nicole Kinross with young Todd Clarke and the Jets have Robbie Vella and John Stevenson, with the jinx behind them the Jets settle in on grids 1 and 3, as the tape just about to goes up John falls sideways and the jinxed grid one returns to the Jets. The all familiar two to one battle is on again, Robbie battles hard against the determined Nicole and holds on for four points but the Comets gain five to decrease the lead to eight.
Heat eight the captains meet again and we hope they get past the start, the Comets have their captain Shane Bentley and Brayden Clarke against the Jets speedsters Josh Debattista (C) and Luke Childs. As they lined up for the start most were thinking don't move , don't move and as the tape flew up the race was on but the Jets were too strong at the start and the Comets had to chase hard, although Shane didn't give up he couldn't stop the Jets from taking seven points leaving the Comets three.
Heat nine saw young wing man Braden Makepeace team up with Robbie Vella, yes on grids 1 and 3 against Todd Clarke and Patrick Evans of the Comets. With his first two missions ending with exclusions and his third being subbed to another rider, young Braden pushed the nerves way down deep, for this mission he was not letting his squad down. After a successful start the Jets pushed ahead with Braden leading and Robbie blocking followed by the Comets Patrick Evans and Todd Clarke . A seven - three race to the Jets.
Next up we had John Stevenson fresh from his exclusion teaming up with Luke Childs for the Jets against Shane Bentley (C) and Trent Forester, the comets are looking for points and was well lead by its' captain with no exception in this race. As it turns out Shane took the four points but the Jets were happy because at the end it was an even point scoring heat, not what the Comets needed.
Heat eleven the Jets Squadron Commander Brian Herd ( Team Manager) subs out Robbie Vella and moves in young Billy Bax against the Comets Todd Clarke and Brayden Clarke. With a sixteen point lead, a chance to give young Billy a run was on the cards and should not have been a surprise. At this stage of the battle an even point race is as good as a win for the Jets and that is what happen, the Jets retains their sixteen point buffer.
The last race and the Jets have retained the League shield, eight years in a row but their is one battle left and the Comets Team Manager Peter Kinross subs in Nicole to team up with Captain Shane Bentley and they were looking for a win in heat twelve. The Jets Braden Makepeace and John Stevenson have a battle on their hands and the Comets gave them one taking the last heat six - four, leaving the final score the Jets 65 points and the Comets 51 points.
Congratulations to the Findon Comets on a good job and to the Salisbury Jets on their deserved win and hard work all year long. A thank you to the LeFevre Club for holding the Event and a another thank you to Announcer Bill Rufus, Flag Marshall John Geertsen , Referee Trevor Dutton and Scorer Fay Fitzpatrick. BRIAN HERD 26" INVITATIONAL by Trevor Duitton
The Brian Herd Invitational formerly the Roger Ellis, this was changed with no offence to Roger but to accomodate the changing nature of the sport in Australia, with new younger riders who didn't know Roger Ellis and the need to have a person more relevant and connected to the Salisbury Club. Looking at this sheet after the draw the competition looked closer with riders that on their day can make a different in a race, Ok Daniel Pudney is a stand out but with the way Cody Chadwick has been racing of late and the speed of Ryan Edson, Ross Preist , Nigel Greenhalgh, then throw in Daniel Bax, Rober Fitzpatrick, Daniel Thompson etc I expected top racing over 20 races.
Race one race saw my hopes for Cody drop a little for I thought seconds and firsts would be the needed in this field but Ryan Edson used his speed to lead Ross Priest , Cody Chadwick , and Bobby McMillan to the finish line.
Brad Hoppo fittness didn't let him down in this his only four pointer for the meet, against , Nigel Greenhalgh, Robert Fitzpatrick and Tony Bax.
Race three was D
aniel Pudney start of a clean sweep team mate Paul White , Daniel Bax and Robert Fleming.
Dean Jolly showed good track knowledge to win over Daniel Thompson , Jay Walters and Brad Thompson.
Ross Priest a rider who has great potential had a good win over Danial Bax , Dean Jolly and Brad Hoppo whose fittness was missing in this race.
Cody Chadwick had a better race this time for four points over Robert Fitzpatrick , Daniel Thompson and Paul White.
Daniel Pudney continued to collect the points early with a good win over Ryan Edson , Nigel Greenhalgh and Bradley Thompson from Murraylands
Bobbie McMillan reserved his fortunes in this race with a win ove
r Tony Bax , Jay Walters and Robert Fleming.
Daniel Pudney owned the track and only used the bare minimum of it to take this third win over Ross Priest , Robert itzpatrick and Jay Walters easily.
Cody Chadwick was back to where I wanted him collecting four points and hopefully setting up for a battle against Pudney in race 14. Brad Hoppo grabbed three points in this race over Robert Fleming and Bradley Thompson.
Daniel Bax started with two points in race one then three points in race two and four points in this race over Danial Thompson , Ryan Edson and brother Tony.
Nigel Greenhalgh took the points from Paul White , Dean Jolly and Bobbie McMillan after a fall
Points after three races each D Pudney (12) R Priest C Chadwick (10) R Edson N Greenhalgh D.Bax (9) B Hoppo D
.Thompson , D Jolly (8) R Fitzpatrick P White (7) B McMillan T.Bax J Walters (5) R Fleming (4) B.
Thompson (3).
Nigel Greenhalgh from grid one picked up another win from Daniel Thompson , Dean Jolly and Ross Priest who snapped his pedal. I think he will look for warranty from Pete Barnes come Christmas time, I believe another rider has had the same problem from that brand of pedal .
Race fourteen was here and I waited for the battle between Daniel Pudney and Cody Chadwick, the battle was there and Cody pushed hard but the class of Daniel allowed him to grabbed another four points with Dean Jolly taking third from Tony Bax.
Ryan Edson got the much needed four points his second win over Brad Hoppo , Paul White and Jay Walters.
Robert Fitzpatrick grabbs his first win over Bobbie McMillan , Daniel Bax and Bradley Thompson.
After four races each D Pudney (16) R Edson N Greenhalgh C Chadwick (13) D.Thompson R Fitzpatrick B Hoppo D.Bax (11) R Priest D Jolly (10) B McMillan P White (9) R Fleming J Walters T.Bax (6) B.Thompson (4).
The Cycle Speedway God would have smile on Ryan , Nigel and Cody as they are the only riders in a position to take the lead if Daniel falls or comes fourth for a run off.
Ross Priest took four points from Paul White , Tony Bax and Bradley Thompson, a much needed boost after breaking his pedal.
Cody Chadwick adds another four points and would be disappointed with his first race but be happy with his other four races. Daniel Bax picked up three points from Jay Walters and Nigel Greenhalgh.
Ryan Edson has a fall he didn't need hurting his knee and his chances in the Invitational , the race was won by Robert Fitzpatrick from Dean Jolly , Robert Fleming and Ryan Edson
Daniel Pudney only needed a third to win the 2008 Brian Herd Invitational but took the full points for a clean sweep win over Bobbie McMillan,B
rad Hoppo and Daniel Thompson

TREVOR DUTTON 20" INVITATIONAL by Trevor Dutton
It's that time of the year for the Salisbury Club Invitationals, where riders from different divisions race against each other in formula racing. ( not the norm in Australia )After the draw everybody grabs the sheet to see who , when and what grid they race against the their opposition, I did the same and looking at the 20" Invitational sheet it seemed to me that Joshua Debattista had it won with Luke Childs missing from the line up to give balance to the Invitational line up. ( a cat amongst the pigeons so to speak - why wasn't he invited ? ) I know I have said in the past that anything can happen in Cycle Speedway but in my mind there was no stand out rider to challenge Josh, what I was looking forward to was the battle for second, third and fourth.
With the likes of Robbie Vella, Shane Bentley, Nicole Kinross, Brayden Clarke, Braden Makepeace and Todd Clarke etc., I
believe these riders would be in the battle through out the 20 race program and if Josh had a fall then he would have a fight to retain his mantle from last year.
First up was Billy Bax grid 1, Robbie Vella on 2 ,Todd Clarke on 3 and Trent Forrester on 4, trent gaining 3 points from grid four was a bonus for him but Robbie took advantage from two and took the four points with Todd taking tree and Billy one point.
Josh Debattista was next up against Shane Bentley,Nicole Kinross and Mark Sheldon, and he showed his class on the track and confirmerd what I thought at first glance at the sheet. Shane took second from Nicole and this being the battle for places behind Josh .
Plymouth Christia
n, Damien Crawford, John Stevenson and Lucy Millikin were up next with John taking first fron Lucy , then
Plymouth and Damien .
Brayden Clarke on grid 2 took four points from Braden Makepeace off of grid 1, followed by Andrew Wilkie and Jake Mathews.
Plymouth Christain rode well to get second from grid 4 with Shane Bentley taking 4 points from his inside grid 3 followed by Braden Makepeace and Billy Bax.
RobbieVella backed up his win in the first race with another win from grid 3, Nicile Kinross from grid 4 picked up a well deserved second from Brayden Clarke and Damien Crawford.
Josh Debattista grabbed another win from John Stevenson, Todd Clarke and Jake Mathews, now it was starting to look like a battle is emerging between Robbie and Josh in race 18 when they met each other.
Mark Sheldon from Murraylands had a good win from Lucy Millikin, Trent Forrester and Andrew Wilkie.
With all riders having two races the points were R Vella, J Debattista, (8) S Bentley, J Stevenson (7) B Clarke , L
Millikin (6) N Kinross, T Forrester, M Shelden, P Christian , B Makepeace (5) T Clarke (4) A Wilkie, J Mathews (3) D Crawford, B Bax (2) . ( I might have misjudged the situation but early in the racing )
Nicole Kinross showed why she has respect on the track with a win over John Stevenson , Andrew Wilkie and Billy Bax., a deserved four points for Nicole.
Race ten saw Shane Bentley take away the shine from the race 18 match up with taking the points from Robbie Vella. Shane wiining the race from Robbie,Lucy Millikin and Jake Mathews.
Mark Sheldon from grid 3 graabed another win from Brayden Clarke , Todd Clarke and Plymouth Christian who I had pencilled in the win from grid 1.
Race twelve saw that Josh Debattista was not thinking of race 18 anymore if he ever did and collected four points to add to his tally over Trent Forrester , Braden Makepeace and Damien Crawford.
Every rider has had three races and the points are as follows J Debattista, (12) R Vella, S Bentley, (11) J Stevenson (10) B Clarke , M Shelden, (9) L Millikin, T Forrester, (8) B Makepeace (7) N Kinross, P Christian, T Clarke (6 ) --- A Wilkie, (5) J Mathews (4) D Crawford, B Bax (3) .
Josh Debattista was up again after a minute break because he had grid 1 again, not that had a bearing on this race against Lucy Millikin , Brayden Clarke and Billy Bax, Josh taking the points again from Lucy, Brayden and Billy.
In race fourteen I think Robbie was still thinking of race ten but lets not take anything away from John Stevenson who going into this race had only dropped two points and didn't disappoint with a win over Robbie Vella , Mark Sheldon and Braden Makepeace.
Todd Clarke grabbed four points from Shane Bentley , Damien Crawford
and Andrew Wilkie.
Nicole Kinross scored her second win from Plymouth Christian , Trent Forrester and Jake Mathews.
Mark Sheldon grabs another four points from Damien Crawford , Billy Bax and Jake Mathews. Mark had a good meet with his third win to finish fourth overall.
Race eighteen was Josh Debattista's race to capture the 2008 20" Invitational by winning every race and this race was no exception with a good win over Robbie Vella , Plymouth Christian and Andrew Wilkie.
Lucy Millikin finally got the win she deserved from Todd Clarke , Braden Makepeace and Nicole Kinross .
Race twenty saw John Stevenson and Shane Bentley going into the race both on 14 points so the battle for second is on a fall to Shane allowed John to take points over Trent Forrester , Brayden Clarke and Shane after the fall. A top effort by John dropping over two points over his five races.
The final placings Only three Trophies Third, second and first, with the winner also getting a speciallydesigned racing top.
4th - Shane Bentley, Mark Sheldon, Lucy Millikin
7th - Trent Forrester, Nicole Kinross
9th - Todd Clarke, Brayden Clarke
11th - Plymouth Christian
12th - Braden Makepeace 13th - Damien Crawford 14th - Andrew
Wilkie 15th - Billy Bax 16th - Jake Mathews Matthew Hurley - Reserve
1st - Josh Debattista 20 pts 2nd - Johm Stevenson 17pts 3rd - Robbie Vella 15 pts.
Two in a row for Josh congratulations on a great display of racing and congratulations to all riders who participated and to the Salisbury Club on putting on the event each year at no cost to the riders, putting back into the sport a an exhibition of top racing. Top job from Referee Kevin Bickle
THE MASTER PLAN by Trevor Dutton
I went along with some Club committee members to a meeting at the Salisbury Council rooms regarding the Adams Oval Master Plan, along with representatives from the two soccer Club on the Park. I went along because I represented the Club at the original meetings back in 2006 and every meeting between the City of Salisbury Council and the Club thereafter and have dealt with issues with the local council and the Club for the last twenty odd years. There has been rumours regarding the Club being forced off the park ( relocated ) the Council at the meeting made it very very clear to all parties at the meeting that the Salisbury Cycle Speedway Club is and will be a part of the Adams Oval Master Plan and not relocated. ( This was done first up before any discussions regarding the upgrade took place )
Below is the draft plan that was on the table as you can see the access for the Club is missing and this was a big concern to the Club. But The Council assured us that the access will stay there with parking available around the track with informal sealed parking between the Track and Tangent Ave. Also parking will be available behind the Clubroom ( old ) as it is now but sealed formal parking. After the meeting I stay back and spoke to the person in charge of traffic control regarding the positioning of the Tangent Ave. access for the Club, he again assured me that the access will remain with sealed informal parking areas including parking around the track. ( informal parking means no marked lines). At this stage the water resource department of the Council believes that the Clubs' water uses is not great enough for it to be hooked up to the park's bore water, this matter may be discussed further.
My gut feeling is that the Council does not for see a problem regarding the area occupied by Salisbury Cycle Speedway and will easily accomadate our concerns and has been concentrating on sorting out the problem between the two Soccer Clubs.
As the Master Plan is settled down and that is all the Clubs concerns can be accommodated, the costings will then take place, then the Council will deal directly with the Club concerned regarding their area, so the Club will be consulted on the final plan that deals with their area. They are hoping that the costings will go to the Council this year, and that the upgrade will happen in stages starting next year.( money willing )
The Junior Soccer Club concerns are that the traffic around the two junior pitches will create a danger for the very young soccer players so the two Junior Pitches ( B & C ) will be swapped ( if enough area available ) with the senior Pitch ( A ). If this can happen the Junior Club would not oppose the Cotton Street access to the Park, you will notice that the entrance to the park is off of Cotton Street and the exit at Decimal to control the traffic. A decision has not been made regarding gates at the enterance and exit but there will be traffic controls in place to slow down traffic in the park. I would suggest that there will not be gates at the entrance and exit.

SALISBURY HOLDS FORERUNNER TO AUSSIE TITLES by Trevor Dutton
October is here and with it comes the City of Salisbury Open Championship, this Salisbury Open has always been the last Open before the Australian Titles and gives riders and spectators alike, a look at what might be for the Aussie Open. Yes I know that some riders may have been missing and some riders that raced Division One today may drop back to Divisiuon Two for the Titles .But even with that in mind it gives us an insight into who will be jockeying for Divisional Titles come November the second at Findon.
It was a beautiful warm day at the Salisbury Club with plenty of water needed to maintain a good racing surface, pre
pared very well by Kevin Bickle the night before.Jeffries again sponsored the City of Salisbury ,the third
year in a row a Big Thank You the the Jeffries company for their support. If you need garden products just click on their name on this or any pages on this site and check out
their products.( Recover is a very good product I strongly recommend it,a top mulch and soil improver )
Only two riders turned out for the Tiny Tots Robert Corsaro and Emily Carden ( I can remember when twenty Tiny Tots riders was a regular roll out ) A non competitive(all winners) division but seriously ridden by the riders, young Robert kept the Referee in check making sure he set his bike up on the grid each race on call. ( lol )Emily had one fall but was back on the track the next races a true trooper.

Division Seven had four riders ( 6 niminated ) this was a tight battle between Matthew Snowden( 18pts ) and Michael Ratcliff ( 17pts ) all
day with three wins and two seconds to Matty and two wins and three seconds to Michael a good battle to continue in November.Kaeden Langham ( 9pts ) improving each race meeting came third with Holy
Greenhalgh ( 6pts ) enjoying her racing fourth.
Division Six saw four riders competing at a fast pace with Matthew Hurley (20pts ) not dropping a point against Joshua Carden ( 14pts ) , Jake Kerley (
11pts ) and Angel Corsaro ( 5pts ). Young Jake needed four races to get his deserved second place in the fifth race, a good effort for a rider who tried hard all day.It was Matthew's day and he put in seriously all day a well
deserved Trophy win but come November ,Todd Clarke and Matt Bryant may be on the track.
Division Five ( 10 nominated ) nine riders were in the draw but only eight riders raced so a vacant grid was left ( more about the electronic draw later ). Two heats gives a mix and match
racing which adds to the excitement but does bring in the luck of the draw but lets take nothing from this division it was good Cycle Speedway racing with only three points between first and fourth. Some top racing between Patrick Evans (15pts ) , Shane Bentley ( 14pts ) , Braden Makepeace ( 14pts ),Plymouth Christian ( 12pts ) Angus Freeman ( 9pts ) , Billy Bax (
6pts ) ,Jake Mathews ( 6pts ) and Christopher Mowbray ( 1pts ) . This division show cased some good moves on the track with inside passes and good tussles in most races a pleasure to watch. With the mixing of the
draw it allowed for some battles for points between the riders with riders grabbing points off of each other to set up a top sudden death final. Interesting battle come November
Division Four, seven riders two heats sets up Robbie Vella ( 16pts ) and Josh Debattista ( 16pts ) for a fight in the final. But before that there was some fine racing from Nicole Kinross ( 12pts )( loved those yellow spokes ) , Lucy Millikin ( 11pts ), Annabell Blaker ( 9pts ), Marc Mastrodomencico ( 6pts ) and Goergia Tulloch ( 6pts) There was a gap between the riders on ability but they all raced well and should be proud of their racing, every rider on the track has an impact on who races in the finals and any thing can happen in Cycle Speedway. The Final was Josh Debattista, Robbie Vella, Nicole Kinross and Lucy Millikin and that's the way it finished. Will Josh Debattista have it all his way in November?

Division Three, six on a grid saw some tight tough racing from riders who race regularly against each other, every race counted as there was no final but total points, no just get into the final and then put in a good race. This allowed for some good racing a pity Nathan Condo-Evans (1pts ) fell in the second race and injured his ankle as he would have had an impact on the points. Dean Jolly raced very well and only a chain mishap stopped him from winning clearly without the run off, as it was Dean and Jay Walters and Anthony Daniels finishing on fourteen points each and a three way run off for first , second and third was needed. The finishing places was Dean Jolly , Jay Walters, Anthony Daniels, Sarah Kinross, Scott Kinross and Nathan Condo-Evans.Come November more riders will fill this division exciting racing aweaits.

Over Thirties, another sudden death final division , seven riders two heats and a good mix of points across the sheet. Frank Jones ( 5pts), Rick Jolly ( 10pts ), Darren Mathews (15pts ), John Hill (11pts ), Robert Fleming (11 pts) Warren Corbett (16pts ) and Jessica Lamb ( 7pts )( Jessica over thirty, Boy I'm getting old ). Only Rick losing his legs in the fourth race ( he finished second) stopped him from impacting on the final. PS if you find his legs please return to the Salisbury Club ). The final placings Warren Corbett, Darren Mathews , John Hill and Robert Fleming .

Division Two six riders on total points good racing between Daniel Bax, Bobby McMillan and Tony Bax ( yes Tony Bax he race well and can when he wants to ) all raced very well and competitively
good to see. It might have been a battle of three but it was good racing with good humour, Bobby McMillan ( 17pts ) Daniel Bax (15pts ) Tony Bax (13pts ) Tyrone Walters , Lucinda Spear and
Ben Blaker .More bat
tles come November
Division One again six riders on the grid and some exciting riding from Ryan Edson, Cameron Crisp, Jackie Kinross ( who been racing since 2002 I would bet 12 years but I'm old ), Nigel Greenhalgh, Cody Chadwick and Ross Priest. This division had good tatics, good moves on the track , speed and tight racing, all the ingredients for good pure racing and we were not disappointed. The final placings Cody Chadwick, Ross Priest, Cameron Crisp, Ryan Edson, Nigel Greenhalgh and Jackie Kinross. Can't wait for November
After the Trophies were handed out the John Virgo Award was announced. But before that announcement I should tell you who John Virgo is, John was the owner of the local Caltex Service Station on White Road, he supported
the Club for many many years when ever the Club couldn't find a sponsor John would come to the party. He used to race cars at Mallala and in rallies
etc and became part of the Salisbury Jets family right up until he retired, besides a life member he holds the number one ticket of the
Club (his membership card is 001). It is a pity we lost contact with him and we should try and contact him.
The announcement after much discussion and a few names put up Patrick Evans was awarded the John Virgo Award and a well deserved winner he was.
A Beautiful day and top racing many thanks to the Salisbury members for putting on a great race day. ( The Referee was OK but was not in the right position at the finish once, needs to work on it )
Thank you to Mick Harley for trying to sort out the problem with the Electronic Marble Draw software, the idea is great when it works but attention to detail is a must to make sure all names are entered and that the software doesn't stuff up. ( Double check draws before they are submitted for printing ) It is important that the draw whether electronic or manual goes smoothly because it is an important part of the Championship and that is why it is vital that riders check in well before the 11.30am deadline.
I'm going to go out on a limb here and will give an opinion on some riders and racing I saw today ...
Division Seven Top racing between Matty and Michael, Michael has the speed but needs to think ahead but that will come. Matty has listened to Ryan at his one on one training after Saturday's race meetings improving his lines.
Division Five some good races , very pleased for Braden , he is handling the tight racing well and is improving positively each meeting and starting to put together consistent races. Top Effort. Plymouth shows signs that he can do it but mirror races ( that is when going into and out of the corners he stops or starts pedaling only when the rider next or in front to him stops or starts pedaling ) he needs to pedal into the corner more and pedal out of the corner first. Plymouth needs confidence in his ability on the track and I believe he will come of age on track and take the next step. Keep up the good work . Patrick Evans has improved greatly but I haven't see him take a bump not sure how he would handle tight tough racing. One to watch
Division Four Robbie Vella improves every time I see him and can't wait to see him in November, I hope he does well. Lucy ( I have a soft spot for Lu ) she raced well better than Meegan would let on, Lucy has matured and enjoys her racing on and off the track. I see some good improvement in her racing Well done .
Division Three Dean can be a frustraing rider to watch but when he puts his mind to it he can do some magic on the track, at times doesn't take racing real serious but does enjoy it and that isat times is more important. Anthony has improved over the last 18 months but needs to ride his race not the rider behinds race. Cycle Speedway is a sport that is not only about speed, power, the gate , the line etc. it has a lot to do with the head. More correctly how you think about the race and how you adapt to the race, Anthony can adapt and has shown this at times but I think he loses the race in the head which leads to losing the race on the track. Trust youself and your ability.
Division Two Daniel Bax raced very well and can mix it with the best but I think Cycle Speedway is not his first love and at times goes thought the motion but when on song a pleasure to watch. Tony, I honestly believe he has improved and is taking his racing seriously ( watch he will prove me wrong (lol)) He really put in and tried to make a claim to the City of Salisbury Division Two Trophy, although he may deny it.
Division One Cody Chadwick Australian Junior Team Captain has taken not one but three steps up the ladder and this is showing in his racing. If you want to see an example of what I was talking about regarding winning the race with your head, just watch Cody no matter what position on the track or the pack he is in, you can see his mind work and the bike follows. He backs his ability on the track and the bike and is always ready for an oppurtunity if it arises. November awaits but the Worlds next year I can't wait I hope it all falls into place.
These opinions are mine and not of the Salisbury Club ............Trevor Dutton Web Editor
TRADITION OUT THE DOOR FOR THE SPORT by Trevor Dutton
Traditionally the Salisbury Club does not race on the October Long Week End, either on the Friday night or Saturday .( I vaguely remember years ago the Club did race a October Long Week End Friday Night )
So why the break from tradition, well it was the only Saturday available for the City of Salisbury Council's Growing for Gold "Come & Try" program. A program that the Club has been involved since the concept was developed by the Council, many Club members went away for the weekend ( the annual away trip for most families ) . But a good number of Club riders and families showed up to put on a performance of races to show the GFG participants how Cycle Speedway compares to other sports available to them.
Twenty one GFG participants rolled up on the day ranging from 4 years to 16 year old young people girls and boys and they all enjoyed their time on the track. They showed up earlier than required so the Club started the GFG event early to get the most out of the opportunity of twenty eager riders. This was the right move because the way the GFG program works the GFG participants try many sports through out the day and may allow a couple of hours at each sport. These riders showed some good skills and a few would be competetive in a short period with just some technical pointers shown to them.
The feedback from the GFG's was very encouraging they rated the Club high on their GFG evaluation forms they fill out and when the GFG familes who won some raffle prizes were contacted at home they were very happy with their experience with the sport and the Club.
A top effert to all Salisbury Riders and members involved on a beautiful day for racing , let's hope we get some new members.
NO FUEL CRISIS FOR THE JETS by Trevor Dutton
It's be awhile since I have done a match report but today I reviewed the DVD of Round 3 Interclub between Comets vs Jets vs
Dolphins. The Jets went into the match two up in the three match series, which allows team racing between riders from Division
seven through to Division one, with three Club competing on the day. Six on the grid , two from each club battling out the the points
that will add to their team tally. With each rider gaining points from six, five, four, three two to one, every point counts as the running tally can show through out the match.
Riders came out onto the track to be shown to the specators, like gladiators of old, a chance to show their colours to the crowd who were waiting for some exciting thrills and spills of Cycle Speedway,Oh and some top racing and they were not disappointed.
Heat 1 :- Division Seven started the proceedings:- Six on the grid ready for the start, tape goes up and away but Jets matthew Snowden goes down on the first bend and is excluded from the restart. Now five on the grid, the tape flies up again Jets Michael Ratcliff leads for one and a half laps but the Dolphins Jack " Storming" Norman goes into overdrive and takes the checkered flag with Michael second Dolphins Kiran Bird third the Comets pairing Karl Schultz and Matt Forrester following.
Division Six saw the Comets power house pairing of Todd Clarke and Matt Bryant lead the race all the way, with Storming Norman taki
ng third with his team mate Luke Poole fourth and the Jets Ratcliff fourth. The Jets Jake Kerley fell in the last lap and the race was declared, not
a good start for the Jets with two races and two exclusions. The progressive score Dolphins 17 pts Comets 16 pts Jets 7 pts
Division Five saw the Jets Luke Childs lead all the way with his team mate Braden Makepeace in the mix until the last lap, went the Comets Brayden Clarke and Trent Forrester shook the race up a bit.Leaving the Jets with 8 point pairing and Comets a 9 point pairing and the Dolphins 4 points.
Division Four had the Jets with a top pairing of Josh Debattista and Robbie Vella but has in the races before not all goes to plan with Josh sliding out and Robbie left to lead the
race but Josh did well to remount his bike and finish fourth, behind the Comets Nicole Kinross and Shane Bently and in front of the
Dolphins Andrew Wilkie and Lucy Millikan.
The Jets lead all the way in Division Three with Jay Waters and Joel Chadwick finishing one two, infront ofthe Dolphins Michael Karpany then the Comets Sarah and Scott Kinross and Gabby Aston. The progressive score Comets 39 pts Jets 35 pts Dolphins 29 pts
Division Two a strange race this one which saw Joel Chadwick doubling up with Daniel Bax for the Jets and for the Comets Bobby McMillan and Ross Priest and for the Dolphins Ty Geersten and Robert Fitspatrick. So it was set for the top race, I sat back and watched the tapes go up Joel leads in and out the first bend , Daniel Bax holds back then drops down and goes under for a run up the straight, the Jets one two. On the start of the second lap Ross Priest takes the lead and the race is on, going into the clubroom corner Daniel loses his chain not good with two laps to go and I think there goes a much needed point but Daniel coasts for a lap and as the pack catches him the checkered flag comes out and we have a three lap race. At this stage the Jets will take any bit of luck and the point.
The Over Thirties pairing for the Jets was Brad Hoppo and Nigel Greenhalgh aginst the Dolphins Paul White and Robert Flemmings and for the Comets Darren Shultz , Robert Thompson amd Andrew Dobbie. The Jets lead all the way with Paul White chasing but trying to get around Bradd Hoppo is not easy.
Division One started with a restart I'm not real sure why but with the following line up of Ross Priest and Brad Gentle (Comets) , Ryan Edson and Cody Chadwick (Jets) and for the Dolphins Danial Pudney and Cameron Crisp, I was looking forward to it.And as it turned out It was an even race with Ross Preist leading Daniel Pudney followed by Cody Chadwick, Ryan Edson Cameron Crisp and Brad Gentle. The interest was in the Pudney Chadwick tussle which was good to see and as I said an even race with all team earning 7 points. The Progressive Score after the first heat the Jets 59 pts , the Comets 56 pts and the Dolphins 50 pts
The start of heat 2 had the Dolphins starting on girds 1 & 4 which suited stormimg Norman and his partner Kian Bird with them taking 11pts and leaving the Comets and Jets splitting the reast 5 pts each in the Division Seven heat.
The Comets lead all way in Division Six with Todd and Matt cleaning up the points and the Jets not in the mix at all .
The Division Five race was a story with some fine racing the Jets Luke Childs and Braden Makepeace raced well. Braden mixed it well with the Comets Brayden Clarke for two lap but a bump from Clarke puts Makepeace down but up he got for the all important one point. A very enjoyable race to watch.
Division Four saw a better race from Josh Debattista, with John Stevenson back racing after a break showing some good signs all is needed now is fitness and that will come. Back to the race an Indian file affair ( that's one rider after another) with Josh leading followed by Nicle Kinross (Comets) Michael Karpany ( Dolphins) John Stevenson Lucy Millikin ( Dolphins) and Patrick Evans for the Comets ( an ex Jets rider good to see him back racing )
Another Indian file affair with the Jets Dean Jolly and Joel Chadwick leading all the way followed by the Comets Scott Kinross and Sarah Kinross and the Dolphins Michael Karpany and Gabby Aston The progressive score Comets 94 pts Jets 94 pts Dolphins 82 pts
Division Two, this time 4 laps, the Dolphins Ty Geersten took the honors with his partner Robert Fitzpatrick taking fourth. 9 pts their haul with the Jeta and the Comets taking 6 pts apiece.
Over Thirties brought Dominos the track ,no not the pizzas ,the game . As they turned the first corner Hoppo and White go down followed Fleming , Greenhalgh Thompson and Schultz one after the other. The restart saw Paul White lead the Jets Hoppo and Greenhalgh followed by Flemimg and Thompson and Dobbie.
A fast paced race for Division One saw Brad Gentle lead Daniel Pudney for much of the race but a slide out by Pudney saw a lead in placings with Cameron Crisp taking the lead from Gentle and Chadwick . a small bump from Ross Preist saw Ryan Edson sliding out with the finished being Crisp, Gentle, Chadwick, Preist, Pudney and Edson.A valuable 8 pts for the Comets and the Dolphins and 5 points for the Jets. The Progressive Score after the second heat the Jets 114 pts , the Comets 111 pts and the Dolphins 108 pts .
A six point spread between the teams sets up the final heat.
In Division Seven the Jets Michael Ratcliff slips his pedal but the race and meet for Div. Seven belonged to the Dolphins Jack Storming Norman and Kiran Bird with only dropping one point through out the match.
Division Six saw the Jets' Jake Kerley race well for a fourth and Michael Ratcliff falling and being over lapped. But this was the Comets pairing of Todd Clarke and Matt Byrant taking all before them with a maximum 32 points in the match.
A good gate by the Jets but a fall on the clubroom corner saw a restart in the Division Five race with without Dolphins Shawn Aston. Another good gate has the Jets one two but Brayden Clarke works hard to take the lead also the Jets take second and third, it still leaves an even point scoring race between the Jets and the Comets. This Division had tight fast racing with Comets taking 26 pts and the Jets 23pts
Division Four saw the Jets Josh Debattista and Robbie Vella at their best with some good team riding and racing mix. In this Division the Jets gained 29 pts , the Comets 20pts and the Dolphins 11 pts.
Division Three another Indian file race no racing mix here the Jets Jay Waters and Dean Jolly lead all the way and over the meet in this division with Joel Chadwick th
ey took all the points 33 of them.
This the last race for Division Two it saw the up high tactic on the first corner, this allows riders to try to control or split the pack at the first corner. The Jets coming out of grids one and two saw Cody Chadwick control the pack up high and Joel Chadwick control the split pack after Cody raced away. Then the race is on with speed and tactics , it looked good early but as the race progressed it didn't look promising for the Jets although Cody was leading it is hard to control more than two riders at once. But a fall of two riders without a whistle allowed the Jets take the eleven points on offer, that's Cycle Speedway no infringement no whistle. In this division over the match only 4 pts between the teams Jets 23pts. Dolphins 21pts and the Comets 19 pts.
A good gate by the Jets' Nigel Ghreenhalgh in the Over Thirties saw the Dolphins Paul White chase Nigel out the fist bend with Brad third , with two races going on Paul tried to join the packs. This is a good team tactic but Brad was up to it and no placings were changed, with Nigel first Paul second, Brad third , Robert fourth, Thompsom fifth and Schultz sixth. The Jets combination of Brad Hoppo and Nigel Greenhalgh only dropping 3 pts for a toal of 30 pts for the match.
The last race of the day saw no prisoners taken with bumps ,falls and slide outs, The Jets Cody Chadwick and Ryan Edson lead
early with Brad Gentle falling on the first corner by himsrlf. On the Clubroom turn Daniel Pudney slides between the Jets dropping
Cody back and allowing Ross Priest in. Ryan Edson holds the lead in the chase , then Cody then slides out on the number two turn ,
back on the bike and the chase beginsagain . Then Danial Pudney bumps Ryan who slides into the fence . The final placings Daniel
Pudney first, Ross Preist second, Cameron Crisp third, Brad Gentle fourth, Cody Chadwick fifth and Ryan Edson sixth.
As I stated in the beginning of this long report the Jets had already won the Interclub Shield but on the day the Jets won the match with the final scores Jets 177 pts, Comets 164 pts and the Dolphins 156pts a top effort by all riders and an enjoyable match to watch.
Interclub is team riding but to be honest it is hard to team ride with six riders on the track especially if the riders are evenly matched. With this in mind it is more important to take points away from your toughest opponent ( team ) rather than winning every heat and the Salisbury Jets have always tried to do that and the riders who have raced a few Interclubs know that. So again congratulations to the Jets on their win and bringing the Interclub Shield back to the Hangar.
You may have noticed that I didn't mention the Referee in the report well she let the riders race and that is what the referee is there for and as always when I see Megan Rufus in the middle she does just that. Top job Ref.
Many many thanks to Bonie Chadwick for the DVD and Tammie Makepeace for the pictures, I'm trying to edit some racing clips and maybe add them into the report.

TRACK UPGRADE IN THE HANDS OF GOD AND THE COUNCIL by Trevor Dutton
The City of Salisbury are about to upgrade our track ready for the 2009 World Titles, this entails replacing the starting grid which has large cracks accross it, and resurfacing the dolomite track. The resurface is just a top up to bring the top surface to around 25mm below the concrete edge but in doing this they must rip up the track bring in more dolomite mix it and relay and roll the surface. This is the best time of the year to do this because the track surface is wet through out but the problem also is the weather you can not lay concrete ( the starting grid ) in the wet. So with the upgrade starting tommorrow (12/08/08) and with the weather as it has been who knows what will happen, the Club allowed a 3 week window for the council to do the upgrade (11th to the 29th of August as the council requested), to have this much needed upgrade the Club must try its' best to work in with the council. And hopefully at the same time the council will lay a new water pipe under the track to allow the Club to use the parks' bore water , this was mentioned to the council at a site meeting regarding the upgrade.
The weather didn't stop the Club members on Saturday ( 9/08/08 ) from installing individual drainage sumps around the track to reduce drainage problems for the new resurfaced track. Six sumps were fitted close to the track drains to catch the dolomite before it enters the main drainage system reducing blocked pipes in the future, with the only two or three sumps remaining to be fitted and these not in real critical areas of the track.
Working in and out of the rain through out the afternoon,it was a top effort by all involved.
