Poles Dominate Cycle Speedway Worlds
Marcin Szymanski, most people's pre-event favourite, is the new world senior cycle speedway champion. He led a Leszno 1-2-3 in the last of three run-offs in
Czestochowa, Poland, after five riders - all Polish - had tied on 16 points in the regulation 20 heats. Szymanski rides in the British Premier Leaue for current leaders Wednesfield.
Only two non-Polish riders made
it through to the individual final: defending champion and Australian seed Daniel Pudney, who scored 12 points with one exclusion, and England captain and seed Lee Aris, also from Wednesfield, who totalled 11 points.

World Junior Cycle Speedway Championships
Baiter Park Poole, 20-22 July 2007 Reports: Graham Sutton & Brian Furness
SUN
DAY: Kolata Takes World Junior Crown
Junior World Championships Podium: L to R Zmuda, Kolata and Priest
Marcin Kolata became the pride of Poland as he took the World Junior title at Poole in a keenly contested final on the Baiter Park circuit ahead of fellow countryman Marek Zmuda and Australia's Ross Priest. The young Pole dropped his only point to Zmuda, winning his other 4 races in style thanks to some powerhouse starts but the positions could have been reversed if Zmuda had not taken a tumble in his second outing.
Ross Priest of Australia tied on 15 points with Batoliej Parol but drew the favour
ed inside gate and showed his rival a clean pair of wheels as he
sped home to take the final rostrum position to the cheers of his dedicated band of supporters, preventing a clean sweep of the honours by the Eastern Europeans.
Englishman Tom Colling was handicapped by a poor start with just 3 points from his opening two races but he recovered strongly to finish just a point outside the frame while the youngest finalist Tom Read of Exeter showed what a bright prospect he is at just 14 years of age, finishing several points ahead of several of the more fancied home riders in 6th position.

Round 2 action and the rain is very apparent on the track
After a nightmare start to the three day event which saw the Harbourside Park circuit under 12 inches of water on Friday morning following the torrential rain which has devastated many parts of the country, the weather improved steadily and Sunday's final was ridden in glorious sunshine as riders were cheered on by their partisan supporters.

England enjoy their second title of the weekend
An exclusion for Tomasz Bartuszuk in heat 2 for movement at the tapes meant that Poland were always chasing the game, and trailed England by four points for most of the match. The visitors closed the gap in heat 11 with a win for Marcin Zmuda, with England's Scott Doherty coming in third behind Rob Fitzpatrick of Australia. However the cushion was restored in the very next heat when Bartolomiej Parol fell and took a single point behind heat winner Tom Hibberd.
In the penultimate heat, with England still four ahead, Tom Colling lined-up on gate four, while Poland, on the inside grid, brought in fast starting reserve Piotr Jamroszczyk. Looking for a good start , Colling moved at the tapes and was excluded. A repeat of the previous evening's final heat drama in the pais looked on the cards, but in the re-run, Jamroszczyk clashed with Welsh captain Kieran Jones. The bend judge saw a legging, and the Pole was also given his marching orders.
This left England needing a single point from the last heat, and the normally fiery Scott Doherty made absolutely sure there was to be no more drama with probably one of the slowest starts of his career, picking up third place as he passed the fallen Welsh rider Ben Mould.
Australia were always in the thick of the action, and would have been right up there with
England and Poland but for two early exclusions for causing stoppages which effectively ended their challenge for the top step of the podium.
Result: 2007 World Junior Team Cup.

Pairs success for the home nation
As so often happens in world team events, the match came down to a tight tussle between co-favourites England and Poland, and when the two nations faced each other in the last of the 20 scheduled heats, they were tied on 43 points each.
At the gun, Poland's Marcin Kolata took the lead from grid one, followed by England?s Tom Colling, but Tom Hibberd found himself at the back, a 6-4 reversal position which would have given Poland the title. However Hibberd never gave in, and passed Piotr Jamroszczyk to salvage a 5-5 and tie the match.
The title was decided by a single rider run-off. Poland won the toss, Kolata taking the inside grid, and England's nominee Hibberd on the outer gate. Kolata led from the tapes, but Hibberd shadowed him all the way, and swung inside to execute a masterly pass at the end of the third lap. The Polish number one failed to respond, and the title was England's.
Bronze medallists Australia were always in the hunt, but three shared heats from their last four rides, including one against Wales which could have been so much worse had Kieran Jones not fallen when challenging Australia's Matt Mathews, took the edge off their challenge.

Yorkshire 93 Australia 87. International Challenge Round 2. Hessle Raceway. Saturday 14th July 7-00.pm.
The Australian's had won the first leg at Cookson Park by over 25 points and the second leg at the Graves centre was called off due to heavy rain. The tourists swapped their Cookson Park guest Craig Marchant for Chris Woodward, while Yorkshire included two Sheffield based Polish riders to bolster the side. The track looked good after recent rain, but proved slippy especially in the opening heats.
The first race started controversially with World Champion Daniel Pudney falling on the last bend, bringing down two opponents while his team mate Chris Woodward cruised to the win and Daniel sprinted for second. The next five heats were drawn before Darius Pilas / Corey Graham took a 7-3 in heat 6 to level the scores. This was followed by a Adam Stephenson / Andy Angell 6-4 to take the home side into a two point interval lead.
The meeting was raced in uncharacteristic sunshine, and a good crowd were cheering on both sides. The Yorkshire men started the second half well with 6-4's to Corey Graham / Jamie Brown and Ryan Hoyland / Pavel Kozlowski. The visitors hit back with a heat 14 maximum for Rob Findlay / Brad Hoppo to get within two points of their hosts. Heat 16 was to be decisive with Adam Stephenson / Darius Pilas making the gate to claim a 7-3 and a 6 point lead which the Yorkshire side held onto with draws in the last two heats.
Daniel Pudney cruised to an great maximum after his first heat scare, and was well backed by Brad Hoppo and the rest of the side. Chris Woodward was unfortunate to fall in heat 13 and suffered an injury to his hand. Darius Pilas was on top form for his adopted side, with Adam Stephenson again the surprise package in a very solid Yorkshire performance. The meeting was raced in a great spirit and was rounded off in the rugby club with a few drinks and presentations, before the Ausies biked home!
Yorkshire:Darius Pilas 16+3, Andy Angell 15, Pavel Kozlowski 15, Adam Stephenson 14+1, Corey Graham 11+1, Jamie Brown 9+2, Ryan Hoyland 9+1, Mark Dilcock 4.

Australia defeats Yorkshire in friendly warm up
Cookson park staged their biggest cycle speedway match since the re-opening when hosting the first of a three match test series between a Yorkshire select and a visiting Australia team who are over in England as part of the first leg of a tour taking in the world junior and senior championships.
The Yorkshire team was drawn from Sheffield , Heckmondwike and Hull and the Australians included the current World champion Daniel Pudney.
Heat 1 brought together Pudney and current Sheffield sensation Jono Birks and it was first blood to Yorkshire as Birks , cheered on by a large enthusiastic crowd raced away to give the home team an early boost with a fine victory. However the Australians soon got into their stride and heat 2 brought them a 7-3 heat victory thanks to Ross Priest and their recent Sheffield Stars signing Mitchell Spear .
Victory in the next heat for the Yorkshire captain , Sheffields Chris Turner , brought another shared heat but it was only a temporary respite as the Aussies forged further ahead to lead at the interval stage 52-38.
The second half followed the same pattern with only Jono Birks being able to effectively compete with the Australian big guns as he reeled off 5 heat wins , beating all of the opposition in turn. Whilst the remainder of the team fought manfully , only 2 further victories were forthcoming as the Aussies stretched their lead to finish the match with a handsome victory 105 - 75.

Leicester vs Australia
Both sides tracked a mixture of youth and experience, and it was the Leicester youth that had the edge lower down the order, Jayes and Hogan outscoring Flemming and Matt Priest 23 points to 6.
Lukas Nowacki scored a paid maximum for the Monarchs whilst Carl Jarvis had the satisfaction of beating the world champion with a fine pass on the final bend of heat 5.
Apart from Pudney and Brad Hoppo Mitch Spear and Ross Priest both impressed for the tourists...as did the referee Mr Alan Evans!
