Cycle Speedway is short circuit bicycle racing on an oval dolomite track ,we mainly race in individual events each weekend and team racing i.e. Interclubs and League Racing through out the year. ( in Australia ).
The opportunity for riders to race at an International level can be achieved with International Tours every two years.This usually applies for riders over thirteen years of age on a 24 or 26 inch bikes.
WHAT DO YOU NEED ?
First you need the desire to join in and have some fun because sport should be fun. Salisbury Cycle Spedway have free loan bikes and helmets... You only have to remember that you have to wear ..
LongSleeved Shirt orTop , Long Trousers , Full Finger Gloves (some clubs have loan Gloves ) and Closed in shoes ( sneakers etc.).
IS IT DANGEROUS ?
Riders can expect to pick up some knocks and grazes but generally , the sport is no more dangerous than other sports such as football or skateboarding.
Care is taken in the running of a race meeting with a referee in charge and First Aid Facilities available.
First Aid Facilities are compulsory for organized race meetings.
WHO DO YOU RACE AGAINST ?
You race with riders of your own age and where possible ability.
Riders race in Divisions based on age , ability and bike size.
TINY TOTS under 5 years is non competitive maximum 16"bike
DIVISION SEVEN under 7 years 16 "bike maximum
DIVISION SIX under 9 years 16" & 20" bike
DIVISION FIVE under 11 years 20"bike
DIVISION FOUR under 13 years 20"bike
DIVISION THREE under 15years 24" bike or above
DIVISION TWO under 18 years 24" bike or above
DIVISION ONE open age 24" bike or above
OVER THIRTY over 30 years 24" bike or above
ALL AGES BASED ON YOUR AGE ON THE FIRST OF JANUARY...
The sport is family orienated and with this in mind we have tried to maintain the costs to a minimum. Membership is $20.00 a Family or $15.00 a Single . The initial try out is free... The fee per Race Meeting there after is $4.00a rider with a maximum of $8.00 per Family Costs to enter Open Championships are $4.00 per rider with a maximum of $8.00 per family.
You can use the Clubs' loan bikes until you build or buy your own Speedway bikes are pretty basic with no brakes , no gearing and no dangerous attachments. You can usually build up a good bike for relatively small amount of money especially if you are prepared to shop around for second hand parts.Brand new "ready to race" bikes are available from some bicycle shops. The cost of Cycle Speedway bikes is upto the individual to spend as little or as much as they can afford .
